Abstract:
A spinal column disc substitute material for nucleus pulposus that is relatively high in load supporting capability, and that can reduce damaging of the annulus fibrosus for insertion at the time of practicing and can be stably held in the annulus fibrosus after practicing, and that can avoid damages by sliding to the annulus fibrosus and vertebral body cartilage endplate around prosthesis application site; and a process for producing the spinal column disc substitute material for nucleus pulposus. There is provided a spinal column disc substitute material for nucleus pulposus, comprised of a matter of PVA gel dried whose saturated water content is in the range of 18 to 50 wt.% and capable of shape change with a shape change ratio of 150 vol% or more upon water absorption. Further, there is provided a process for producing the above spinal column disc substitute material for nucleus pulposus, comprising the steps of preparing a PVA gel whose saturated water content is in the range of 20 to 53 wt.%; converting the PVA gel in water-containing form to a PVA hydrogel, attaining shaping into a hollow configuration; irradiating the PVA hydrogel with 20 to 100 kGy &gammad -rays; and drying the PVA hydrogel in the state of being deformed so as to attain elimination of the hollow.
