Abstract:

A spindle (1) of a machine tool, which has a through hole capable of holding therein a collet (30) gripping a tool holder (31) and a draw bar (27) to which the collet (30) is fixed, and an inner tapering surface for retaining the tool holder, is a single cylindrical body formed out of a ceramic material. The single cylindrical body includes a key (5) engageable with a key way of the tool holder (31) and one set of elongated holes (2) through which a pin (24) for moving the draw bar (27) in the axial direction of the spindle (1) passes. The spindle is preferably formed out of a silicon nitride ceramic and has a thickness of not less than 0.1 times as large as the outer diameter thereof and not less than 0.02 times as large as the length thereof.
