Abstract:
The present invention provides a spontaneous alignment assistant for liquid crystal compositions, which is capable of ensuring storage stability if added to a liquid crystal composition, while enabling vertical alignment of liquid crystal molecules without use of a PI layer. A spontaneous alignment assistant for liquid crystal compositions according to one embodiment of the present invention contains a compound which has a partial structure represented by formula (i), especially a structure represented by formula (i) wherein Ki
1 is represented by one of formulae (K-1) to (K-11). Consequently, this spontaneous alignment assistant for liquid crystal compositions adsorbs onto substrates which sandwich a liquid crystal composition (a liquid crystal layer) when used in the liquid crystal composition, thereby enabling the liquid crystal molecules to be held in a vertically aligned state. Consequently, a spontaneous alignment assistant for liquid crystal compositions according to the embodiment of the present invention enables the alignment of liquid crystal molecules without use of a PI layer (namely, vertical alignment of the liquid crystal molecules is induced when no voltage is applied thereto, while achieving horizontal alignment of the liquid crystal molecules when a voltage is applied thereto).
