METHOD FOR SIDE STITCHING OF A MATTRESS

Field of the Invention

Invention relates to spring mattresses, especially to spring mattresses with a side stitching arrangements. The invention also relates to methods for side stitching of mattresses.

Background of the Invention

Several spring mattresses with a side stitching arrangement are known from the prior art documents such as United States patent publication Nos. 2,105,224, 2,359,220 and 2,615,179.

United States patent publication No. 9, 179,782 discloses a perimeter-wrapped mattress comprising: a substantially rectangular-shaped core structure framed having side walls and corners; a bottom panel having bottom flanges extending upward from a perimeter edge, thereby surrounding the side walls; a top panel having top flanges extending downward from a perimeter edge, thereby surrounding the side walls; a side cover that covers the side walls of the foam encasement to secure the top cover to the bottom cover; a strip of fabric wrapped around a perimeter of the sidewalls and corners; and said strip of fabric is secured to the side walls using an adhesive.

United States patent publication No. 8,800,082 discloses a mattress assembly having a composite encasement surrounding a coil spring unit in which the composite encasement comprises alternating layers of canvas and foam, and in which a side border assembly of quilted material is attached to the exterior walls of the composite encasement by means of multiple, spaced, lines of stitching extending through the alternating layers of canvas and foam to affix the side border assembly to the encasement.

Nevertheless, a side stitching has a tendency to degrade during the use of a mattress. Therefore, it is necessary further to improve a side stitching arrangement. Summary of the Invention

Aim of the invention is reached by a design of a spring mattress with a new side stitching arrangement and a method for side stitching of the spring mattress. The spring mattress of the invention comprises a board defining a shape and perimeter of the mattress. The board is section which encompasses spring units, which a later are covered by a top cover and by a bottom cover. The board itself is covered from a side by means of a side cover. Inner section of the board is filed with another set of springs, preferably pocket springs, more preferably honeycomb pocket springs. An upper part of the matters as well as the board is covered by an upper layer and a bottom layer, which by themselves may comprise multiple layers.

The board comprises a first metal hoop and a second metal hoop around a perimeter of the board. Said first metal hoop is disposed at a top outer edge of the board, but said second hoop is disposed at a bottom outer edge of the board. The board further comprises a third metal hoop disposed around an inner side of the board. The third metal hoop provides additional stiffness to the board and the mattress itself and in the meantime provides a secure structure for affixing the side cover to the board. Preferably, the third metal hoop is positioned in a middle between a bottom and a top of the board or a equal distances from the first and the second metal hoops. The board further comprises a plurality of spring units, preferably pocket spring units, disposed within the board in a space between the all three metal hoops. In the each corner of the board, a corner mount is positioned.

The board further comprises multiple layers or covers. The board comprises an inner board sheet disposed on an inner side of the board covering the board and third metal hoop. The board comprises an outer board sheet disposed on an outer side of the board to form a side cover of the board including the first and the second metal hoops. The inner and outer board sheets may be made of nonwoven sheet or Fibertex® textile sheet. Said sheets protect or avoid sewing thread to touch the third metal hoop and be cut. The board further comprises a side cotton layer, which covers the side wool layer from a side and partly covers a top of the board. The side cotton layer entirely covers the first metal hoop disposed at the top outer edge of the board. The board further comprises a side wool layer disposed on the outer side of the board and covering the outer board cover. The next of final side layer is a side cover disposed on and around the outer side of the board and covering the side wool layer. The spring mattress further comprises a side stitching arrangement comprising a plurality of spaced apart side stitches. Each stich comprises a sewing thread, which forms a loop between the cover and the third metal hoop tightening or affixing said side cover to the third metal hoop and in result to the outer side of the board.

The sewing thread is continued from one stitch to another adjacent side stitch along the third metal hoop until all side stitches are sewn for the board.

The present invention fulfils the above and other objects by providing a mattress constructed using a method, especially a method for side stitching of the mattress, wherein the method comprises the following steps. Providing a needle, a length of which is more than a distance between the outer metal hoops and inner metal hoop in order to pass through the entire width of the board and still be reached by a sewing thread. The next step is insertion of the needle into a board until said needle passes through the entire board and each end of the needle is on each side of the board.

The needle may be passed above or below said third metal hoop. In a case when the needle is passed below the third metal hoop in order to provide one sewing thread of a stitch under the third metal hoop, then in subsequent step the needle is passed above the third metal hoop. In the result, a loop of the thread is formed around the third metal hoop and a cover is securely affixed to the board. In a case when the needle is passed above the third metal hoop in order to provide one sewing thread of a stitch above the third metal hoop, then in subsequent step the needle is passed below the third metal hoop, in result of which a loop of the thread is formed around the third metal hoop and a cover is securely affixed to the board. The main feature of aforementioned is that the sewing thread is passed on both sides of the third metal hoop in order to create a knot and form a loop around the third metal hoop.

After insertion of the needle, the subsequent step is providing a sewing thread with a first loop at one of its ends. Said sewing thread is inserted into an eyelet of the needle. The needle carrying the sewing thread is then passed through the entire board until the sewing thread is passed through the entire width of the board and comes out on an outer side of the board. When a part of the sewing thread is on the outer side of the board another loop at the end of the sewing thread is formed. Then the needle is inserted through the outer cover back into the board. The point of insertion is in close proximity to the previously made point, where the sewing thread passed out from the previous step. Hence, the outer cover is affixed to the sewing thread. In the next step the needle carrying the sewing thread passes back through the entire width of the board until the sewing thread reaches the third metal hoop and goes behind it and through the previously made first loop of the sewing thread. A thread knot is made in result of which a side stitch is formed and the cover is firmly affixed to the third metal hoop in a secure manner. Remaining sewing thread is cut off. The aforementioned steps are repeated in order to make next, spaced apart side stitch until a side stitching is performed around a perimeter of the mattress.
