Description:
STAND FOR SUPPORTING LIMBS AND METHOD FOR ITS USE

The object of the invention is a stand for supporting limbs and a method for its use designed to create conditions for providing treatment on patient's limbs. The invention belongs to class A61G 13/12 of the International Patent Classification.

The technical problem that is satisfyingly solved by the present invention is a construction and embodiment of a stand for supporting limbs to provide safe support of the limbs, and a method for its use with the purpose of providing efficient treatment on a limb and conditions for sterile preparation of an operating area and for preventing crossing of the operating area.

Conditions for providing treatment (surgery etc.) on a limb include a set of mutually related factors that do not exclude each other and encompass a technical part (constructional design of a support, its arrangement and removal) and methods for providing a sterile environment when using the support (prevention of crossing of the sterile area).

The set technical problem of providing adequate support to patient's limbs during treatment (surgery) has mostly been solved in a way that medical assistants who attended treatment supported or otherwise (by lifting or holding) supported patient's limbs in a desired position upon a request of a treatment provider. Such assistance can be very demanding when the treatment takes a longer period of time and also dangerous for the patient due to potential subjective mistakes.

There is a solution disclosed in patent document WO 2009/126032 which provides for a support of a patient's limb, especially a leg, wherein two support rods carrying adjustable leg supports are detachably fastened to lower corners of an operating table. The solution is, with respect to its embodiment / part of the operating table (wherein its arrangement reduces the working space at the operating table) and as such not universally applicable.

DE 202 14 451 discloses a freely movable support device for supporting patient's legs during a leg disinfection process before a surgery; the device has two silicone loops for legs and a hydraulic height adjustment means. It has no permanent contact with the operating table. The device itself is sophisticated for being manufactured and occupies much space at the operating table; moreover, it is not universally applicable in surgeries and cannot be simply removed after use.

The stand for supporting limbs and the method for its use eliminate disadvantages of the described solution to the problem by assistance of medical staff and known solutions in that the stand comprises two standalone units each having a tripod with a vertical support and a telescopic extension with a pointed plug and a transversal bar with respective openings at both ends, and a movable adjustable loop or loops with a stop element. The invention will be described in more detail by way of an embodiment and figures, in which:

Figure 1 shows an assembled stand for limb support of the invention;

Figure 2 shows positioning of the stand for limb support before treatment;

Figure 3 shows preparation of a patient for positioning his limbs into the assembled stand for limb support of the invention;

Figure 4 shows a detail of the stand for limb support of the invention and depicts a possible shift of a movable loop or loops 10, the shift of which on a transversal bar 7 can be fixed with a stop element of a holder 9.

Figure 1 shows the assembled stand for limb support of the invention. The stand of the invention consists of two vertical supports 1 , 1 , each provided with a tripod 2, 2' with levelling feet 3, 3' and a telescopic extension 4, 4' with a pointed plug 5, 5'. The telescopic extension 4, 4' can be fixed at a desired height by an adequate catch 6, 6'. Apart from the vertical supports 1 , 1', the stand of the invention further consists of a transversal bar 7 with adequate openings 8, 8' at both ends. The openings 8, 8' allow for simple installation and removal of the transversal bar 7 on the telescopic extensions 4, 4' of the vertical supports 1 , 1' in a way that a pointed plug 5 of the telescopic extension 4 of the vertical support 1 is inserted into the opening 8 and the pointed plug 5' of the telescopic extension 4' of the vertical support 1' is inserted into the opening 8'. In the holder 9 on the transversal bar 7 there is arranged an adjustable loop or loops 10, the shift of which on the transversal bar 7 can be fixed by a stop element of the holder 9 (Figure 4).

Said elements of the stand designed to support limbs in a treatment are assembled and installed after a next procedure as shown in Figures 2 and 3. First, the catch 6, 6' is used to regulate an adequately equal height of the telescopic extensions 4, 4' of the vertical supports 1 , 1' with respect to a patient's position, then the vertical supports 1 , 1' are arranged at each side of a bed at a distance from the edge of the bed (between 20 and 40 cm) transversally to patient's limbs. Both vertical supports 1 , 1' are connected with the transversal bar 7 by a combination of pointed plugs 5, 5' and openings 8, 8'. A loop 10 is inserted into the holder 9 on the transversal bar 7 such that the loop is arranged in the holder 9 along its entire width.

In the stand thus assembled a patient's limb is arranged in a way that a limb with its toes oriented forward is inserted into an open loop 10 and then the loop is hooked behind the heel bone. The limb is stabilised/fixed in the loop 10 by means of the holder 9.

If the stand is used to support limbs of the invention for the preparation of a sterile field, the operating table, after the limb has been arranged into the loop, is tilted by 30° downwards and thus the angle between the bed and the limb is increased which allows for an easier preparation of a surgery field. The stand for supporting limbs of the invention thus allows us to carry out a method for providing conditions for a treatment on a limb. The structural features of the stand of the invention allow for a simple installation, provide undisturbed treatment on a patient's limb (even of a longer one) and what is essential is that the described construction leaves enough space for a selected treatment and a simple aseptic preparation of the stand in conformity with instructions. The stand of the invention not only provides for an adequate positioning of a limb for a treatment on the limb, it is further stable, a simple selection of various shapes and lengths of the loops is possible depending on the purpose of use and patient's needs. Damages of nerves and disturbance of blood circulation are herewith prevented in cases when patient's consciousness or sensing is disturbed.

With the stand for supporting limbs of the invention only one person is needed to simply position a loop onto a patient's limb where patient's blood circulation or nerves can be harmed. The limb is prevented from swinging and from falling out of the loop.

After the treatment is over, the stand of the invention can easily be disassembled due to its simple construction and the transversal bar 7 is fixed with the holder 9 onto the vertical support 1 , 1 '.
