Abstract:

A starter motor for a straddle-type vehicle is provided which, while improving vehicle mountability, can improve characteristics of the rotation speed and output torque for starting an engine with a simple structure. The starter motor for a straddle-type vehicle is provided with a rotor, a brush, and a movable permanent magnet which is supported by the casing so as to be capable of moving in the circumferential direction of the rotor independently of the rotor, within an angular range including a retarded position, at which the angular position relative to the brush has been displaced in the retard direction, and an advanced angle position, at which said angular position has been displaced in the advance direction with respect to the retarded angle position and which generates a torque on the rotor greater than the torque at the retarded angle position. The movable permanent magnet is configured so as to be positioned in the advanced angle position when the rotation of the rotor is started by said rotor being supplied with current, and to move in the retard direction to the retarded angle position within the period that the rotor rotates by being supplied with current.
