A starter motor with an idle gear, wherein a helical spline part (61) is formed on a drive shaft (32) rotated by a motor (11) through a planetary gear mechanism (12) and an over-running clutch (13) movable in the axial direction is mounted thereon. The clutch inner (57) of the over-running clutch (13) is formed integrally with the pinion (14) and the pinion (14) is meshed with the idle gear (15). A synthetic resin slip plate (95) is interposed between the idle gear (15) and the clutch cover (68) of the over-running clutch (13). The slip plate (95) comprises slidable contact surfaces (95a) and (95b) in contact with the idle gear (15) and the clutch cover (68), and annular grease grooves (96) holding a grease on the slidable contact surfaces are recessed in the slidable contact surfaces (95a) and (95b). Thus, the lubricity of a spacer interposed between slidable contact members rotating at different speeds can be increased, material cost can be reduced, and seizure between the members can be prevented.
