Abstract:
Provided is a steel material whereby excellent fatigue strength is obtained even when the steel material is welded before carburizing and used to manufacture a carburized steel component. The steel material comprises, in terms of % by mass, 0.09-0.16% C, 0.01-0.50% Si, 0.40-0.60% Mn, no more than 0.030% P, no more than 0.025% S, 0.90-2.00% Cr, 0.10-0.40% Mo, 0.005-0.030% Al, 0.010 to less than 0.050% Ti, 0.010-0.030% Nb, no more than 0.0080% N, no more than 0.0030% O, 0.0003-0.0030% B, and 0.0005-0.0050% Ca, the remainder comprising Fe and impurities, and has a chemical composition satisfying formulas (1)-(3) in the specification. In a cross section parallel to the axial direction of the steel material, the occurrence of Mn sulfide is 70.0/mm2 or less, and the occurrence of oxides is 25.0/mm2 or less.
