Abstract:
A steel suitable for laser welding which has the following composition in wt %: C: 0.01 to 0.20 %, Si: 0.01 to 1.5 %, Mn: 0.2 to 2.0 %, P: 0.02 % or less, S: 0.02 % or less, Al: 0.0005 to 1.0 % and balance: Fe and inevitable impurities; and has a thickness of mill scale of 50 $g(m)m or less; and satisfies the following formula: 0.4 < (0.88 [%Al] + 1.14 [%Si]) < 1.5. It is preferred that the steel further comprises one or more elements selected from among Nb, V, Mo, Cu, Ni, Cr and B. The steel exhibits excellent laser welding characteristics even when the mill scale is not removed.
