Abstract:

A steel wire of pearlite texture containing 0.8-1.0 mass % of C and 0.8-1.5 mass % of Si, wherein an average hardness of a cross-sectionally outer portion thereof the depth of which is up to 100 $g(m)m measured from an outer surface thereof is higher than that of a cross-sectionally inner portion thereof by at least 50 in terms of micro-Vickers hardness, and a method of manufacturing the steel wire, comprising shaving a steel wire which has the above-mentioned chemical components and texture, patenting the shaven wire, drawing the patented wire, subjecting the drawn wire to distortion eliminating annealing at 350°-450 °C, and then shot-peening the steel wire thus treated. This steel wire can be obtained by wire drawing without carrying out hardening and tempering and has a high thermal resistance and a high fatigue strength.
