Abstract:
Provided is a steering device, which can be reduced in size and weight and which can be easily adapted for a vehicle such as a front-wheel drive car having a narrow engine room. The steering device is constituted to comprise a relay rod (3) rotatably borne in a gear casing (5) and having a helical ball rolling groove formed therein, an input shaft (20), to which the rotation of a steering shaft (2) is transmitted, rotation transmitting means (21, 38 and 35) for converting the rotation of the input shaft into the rotational motion of the relay rod and for allowing the axial movement of the relay rod, a screw nut (36) threaded in the ball rolling groove of the relay rod through a multiplicity of balls and fixed in the gear casing, thereby to move the relay rod in the axial direction as the relay rod rotates, a pair of tie rods (10) for moving a steering wheel as the relay rod moves in the axial direction, and a pair of spherical bearings (11) for transmitting not the rotational motion of the relay rod to the tie rods but the axial movement of the relay rod to the tie rods.
