Abstract:
The limited memory bandwidth of storage controllers tends to acts as a bottleneck, and storage controllers require large capacity memory for caching. If, however, the memory bandwidth and memory capacity of a storage controller are increased by increasing the number of memories mounted in the storage controller, then the result will be an increase in the cost, the memory power consumption, and the mounting surface area of the storage controller, making it difficult to implement the controller. The storage system according to the present invention comprises one or more storage drives and one or more controllers, each controller receiving a processing request from a higher-level device, wherein each of the one or more controllers is provided with a processor and an accelerator for processing the processing request, wherein the accelerator is provided with a plurality of internal data memories and an internal control memory, and if the received processing request is a read I/O request, then the accelerator stores control information relating to the request in the internal control memory, reads pieces of data specified by the request from at least one of the one or more storage drives, and temporarily stores the read pieces of data in the one or more internal data memories while at the same time sequentially transferring stored pieces of data from the one or more internal data memories to the higher-level device.
