Abstract:

A strain-sensing optical cable having a water infiltration detecting function comprises, from inside to outside, an optical fiber (1), a nylon sheath (2), a water-swelling layer (3) and a strengthening layer (4) sequentially. The strengthening layer (4) is a mesh-like woven structure which allows outside moisture to infiltrate to the water-swelling layer (3). When a water infiltration phenomenon occurs, water infiltrates to the water-swelling layer (3) through the strengthening layer (4) and the water-swelling layer (3) expands rapidly. The strengthening layer (4) limits the expansion such that the optical fiber (1) inside the nylon sheath (2) is squeezed, causing variation of attenuation curve of the optical fiber. The nylon sheath (2) covers the optical fiber (1) tightly, and the stress spreads more directly and the curve variation of the optical fiber (1) is more obvious when the nylon is in tight contact with the optical fiber (1) because of the higher modulus of nylon, thus enabling monitoring personnel to handle the fault due to water infiltration according to the position having the curve variation. After the fault is handled, the moisture in the water-swelling layer (3) evaporates in a dry environment and returns to the state before water infiltration, and therefore the optical cable can be used repeatedly.
