Title:
Support member in the form of a hollow section for use in construction
Document Type and Number:
WIPO Patent Application WO1997010394
Kind Code:
A3
Abstract:
The invention pertains to an elongated hollow structural member that has a constant cross-section over its entire length and can be subjected to bending and compressive stresses. It can be used in construction as a pillar or a girder. The aim of the invention is to devise a support member that is made from renewable raw materials or remnants thereof or waste materials, that possesses sufficient strength and solidity, that can be manufactured to variable sizes and bearing capacities and that is simple to recycle and dispose of. This aim is accomplished with a construction support member in the form of a hollow section, comprised of layers of a sheet-like material that are wound around and bonded to one another to form plies. The walls of the support members consist of multiple layers of paper. The layers are produced from webs overlappingly wound in spirals. The layers are bonded with a waterproof adhesive, with the cross-section of the support member remaining constant over its entire length. The hollow-section support member can be further strengthened by being pretensioned in the longitudinal direction. The webs consist predominantly of paper and are combined with webs of fiber or woven fabric to meet the given requirements for strength. It is also possible to insert one support member coaxially inside another and bond the two together. In another arrangement, a number of support members of lesser diameter are inserted axially parallel into a support member of larger diameter and optionally cemented. This yields a high degree of stiffness at a low weight.
