Abstract:
This surface-coated cutting tool includes a base material and a coating formed on the surface thereof, wherein: the coating includes one or more layers; at least one of the layers is an Al-rich layer that contains hard particles; the hard particles have a sodium chloride-type crystal structure and comprise a plurality of aggregated first unit phases and second unit phases that are interposed between the first unit phases; the first unit phases comprise a nitride or a carbonitride of AlxTi1-x; the atomic ratio x of Al in the first unit phases is 0.7-0.96; the second unit phases comprise a nitride or a carbonitride of AlyTi1- y; the atomic ratio y of Al in the second unit phases is not less than 0.5 but less than 0.7; and, when analyzed by an X-ray diffraction method from a direction normal to the surface of the coating, the Al-rich layer has a maximum peak in (220) plane.
