Abstract:

A membrane (12) provided in this surface-coated cutting tool (10) has an α-Al2O3 layer that contains a plurality of α-Al2O3 crystal particles. The area A1 occupied by coarse-grained crystal particles A constitutes 50% or less of an α-Al2O3 layer color map comprising 15μm2 of a machined surface parallel to the surface of the α-Al2O3 layer. The area A2 occupied by (001)-plane-oriented crystal particles is 90% or more of the area A1, while the area B1 occupied by medium-grained α-Al2O3 crystal particles B is 20-50%, inclusive, of the area A1. The area B2 occupied by (001)-plane-oriented crystal particles is 90% or more of the area B1, while the area C1 occupied by fine-grained α-Al2O3 crystal particles C is 10-50%, inclusive, of the area B1. The area C2 occupied by (001)-plane-oriented crystal particles is 50% or more of the area C1. The proportion of the combined surface area of the area A1, the area B1, and the area C1 relative to the surface area of the entire color map is 95% or higher.
