Abstract:
A surface coated cutting tool with a hard coating layer formed on a tool base body surface thereof, wherein the hard coating layer includes a Ti compound layer, said Ti compound layer having a total average layer thickness of 2-15μm and comprising one or more layers selected from a TiC layer, a TiN layer, a TiCN layer, a TiCO layer, and a TiCNO layer, at least one of said layer(s) being a TiCN layer; at least one of the TiCN layer(s) in the Ti compound layer demonstrates a maximum diffraction peak intensity at the (200) plane during X-ray diffraction and has an orientation index Tc(200) of 2.0 or greater; and in the Ti compound layer, crystal grains that have a columnar, vertically elongated structure with an aspect ratio of 5 or greater preferably occupy 70% or more of the area of a vertical cross-section of the Ti compound layer.
