Abstract:
Provided is a surface-coated cutting tool exhibiting excellent chipping resistance and wear resistance in intermittent cutting. A surface-coated cutting tool in which a hard coating layer including a TiAlN layer is provided on the surface of a tool substrate, wherein the composition of the TiAlN layer when expressed by the compositional formula (TixAl1-x)N has an average composition satisfying the expression 0.10 ≤ x ≤ 0.35 (where x is an atomic ratio), a high-Ti band-shaped region in which the composition of Ti components is high relative to the average composition x of Ti components in the TiAlN layer is present at least in a direction at an angle of 30 degrees or less with a line normal to the surface of the tool substrate, and preferably, the average composition X of Ti components in the high-Ti band-shaped region satisfies the expression (x + 0.01) ≤ X ≤ (x + 0.05), the average width W of the high-Ti band-shaped region is 30-500 nm, and the average area ratio St of the high-Ti band-shaped region is 3-50% by area.
