Abstract:
Disclosed is a surface-coated member comprising a substrate and a coaling layer
formed on the surface of the substrate. On the surface of the coating layer, two
or more first phases and a second phase coexist. Each of the first phases comprises
at least one compound having an oxygen and at least element selected from metals
belonging to Groups 4, 5 and 6 in the periodic table, aluminum and silicon, and
the second phase comprises at least one compound selected from a carbide, a nitride
and a carbonitride of at least one element selected from metals belonging to Groups
4, 5 and 6 in the periodic table, aluminum and silicon. Also disclosed is a method
for manufacture of the surface-coated member. Further disclosed is a cutting
tool having the surface-coated member. The cutting tool comprises a rake face
formed on the upper surface of the cutting tool, a flank face formed on a side surface
of the cutting tool, and a cutting blade formed on a ridge line formed at the intersection
of the rake face and the flank face, wherein the rake face comprises at least the
surface of the coating layer.
