Abstract:
A surface coating cutting tool exhibiting both high wear resistance and high fracture resistance. A surface coating cutting tool includes a base material and a coating layer. The coating layer comprises a single layer or multiple layers. In a cross-section of the coating layer taken along a specific plane, if the thickness of the coating layer at the position at which an edge ridge line section is thinnest is T1 and the thickness of the coating layer at a point separated by 1 mm from an edge ridge line in the direction to the rake face is T2, the expression of T1 < T2 is satisfied, and if the point on the coating layer surface which is separated by a distance Da from the edge ridge line in the direction to the rake face is a and the point on the coating layer surface which is separated by a distance Db from the edge ridge line in the direction of the clearance face is b, Da and Db fall within a specific numerical range. In the region occupying 10% or more of a region (E) which has a thickness of 0.1T1-0.9T1 from the surface of the portion of the coating layer which extends from the point a to the point b, the difference between the orientations of crystal grains forming the coating layer is greater than or equal to 5 degrees and less than 10 degrees.
