Abstract:
A surface coating member comprising a base body, a hard coating layer formed on the surface of the base body, the hard coating layer comprising a lower layer consisting of at least one layer, and an upper layer formed on the surface of the lower layer and consisting of at least one layer, wherein the ratio (FL/FU) is 1.1 - 30 where FU is the peel road at which the upper layer starts to peel off the surface of the lower layer, and FL is the peel road at which the lower layer starts to peel off the surface of the base body. Thus, there is obtained a surface coating member which is superior in toughness and high in chip resistance and applicable to long-life cutting tools or the like, even under severe cutting conditions with heavy shocks acting on a tool for cutting metals such as steel, particularly for continuously cutting cast iron. It is possible to increase wear resistance while maintaining the superior chip resistance.
