Abstract:
[Problem] To provide: surface-modified magnetic powder particles of an iron-based oxide which were good in solid-liquid separation in the production process, show satisfactory dispersibility in coating materials for forming magnetic recording media of the coating fluid application type, have satisfactory alignment properties, and are reduced in the dissolution of water-soluble alkali metals therefrom; and a process for producing the surface-modified magnetic powder particles of an iron-based oxide. [Solution] A solution of either trivalent iron ions or trivalent iron ions and metal ions for replacing some of the Fe sites is neutralized with an aqueous alkali solution to yield a precursor. The precursor is coated with a silicon oxide and then heated to obtain a magnetic powder of an ε-type iron-based oxide. A hydroxide or hydrous oxide of Al and/or Y ions is adhered to the obtained magnetic powder, thereby obtaining surface-modified magnetic powder particles of an iron-based oxide which are good in solid-liquid separation in the production process, show satisfactory dispersibility in coating materials, and are reduced in the dissolution of water-soluble alkali metals therefrom.
