Abstract:
Provided are: a method of improving the work function of electrodes with a simple operation; and an organic EL element that is provided with electrodes having a high work function, and that has excellent light emitting characteristics (light-emitting efficiency, service life), a good light-emitting surface with minimal luminance variations and defects, and low leakage current. The surface treatment method for electrodes comprises a contact step wherein an electrode made from metal oxide is brought into contact with a solution containing water together with a silane compound represented by formula (1) and/or a partial hydrolysis-condensation product thereof. The organic EL element is obtained by laminating, in turn, a light-emitting layer and a cathode, on an anode made from a metal oxide which has been subjected to surface treatment using said method. Si (OR)p (X)q(OH)4-p-q (1) [In formula (1), OR represents independent alkoxy groups or aryl oxy groups, X represents independent hydrolyzable groups other than OR, p is an integer from 1 to 4, and q is an integer from 0 to 3, where p + q ≦ 4.]
