This plunger for a limit switch has slits formed thereon in such a manner that the amount of light that falls on a light-receiving element varies according to a displacement in the plunger. The limit switch is provided with: a setting processing unit (123) for setting a voltage value output by the light-receiving element as a threshold value when a setting instruction has been input under circumstances in which the plunger has been displaced to a position specified by a user; a position detector (113) for performing detection processing for detecting whether the plunger is in a position that is closer to a reference position than the specified position by comparing the set threshold value and the voltage value output by the light-receiving element; and an output controller (119) for outputting a signal on the basis of the detection processing result. This configuration enables a switch to be provided that is capable of easily outputting a signal according to the desired position of a displacement member without requiring an adjustment screw in a switch that outputs a signal according to the position of a displacement member.
