Abstract:
An efficient synthesis of sialic acid (N-acetylneuramic acid) useful as the starting material of medicines, a synthetic intermediate therefor, isosialic acid as an isomer of sialic acid, synthesis thereof, and a synthetic intermediate therefor. Sialic acid is synthesized from D-glucose and oxaloacetic acid through the intermediates (Ia) and (IIIa), while isosialic acid represented by formula (IV) is synthesized from an isomer of the intermediate (Ia).
