Abstract:
Provided is a road surface reflectance classification system which is intended to alleviate, e.g., the limit caused by a wet road surface or a specific illumination condition in a driver assistance system (DAS) that relies on image processing such as detecting of lane markers. For example, the road surface reflectance to be obtained is used for vehicle chassis control. An on-board camera for capturing images ahead of the vehicle is used to measure a bidirectional reflectance distribution function (BRDF). The images of a plurality of patches on the road surface ahead of the vehicle are captured to determine, for incident beams of light at given irradiances and given zenith angles, assuming the spatial invariance principle, the reflection radiance of reflected beams of light at multiple zenith angles. Alternatively, the images of one patch on the road surface ahead of the vehicle are sequentially captured to determine, for incident beams of light at given irradiances and given zenith angles, assuming the temporal invariance principle, the reflection radiance of reflected beams of light at multiple zenith angles.
