A system and method for controlling a mainline hybrid power locomotive set, wherein in a mainline hybrid power locomotive set composed of a pure battery-powered locomotive and a diesel locomotive: when a train is in a state of going downhill or reducing speed, using a power brake of the pure battery-powered locomotive to charge a battery; when the traction power required by the train is higher than a set value, the pure battery-powered locomotive and the diesel locomotive jointly pulling the train; when there is a surplus amount of traction capacity of the diesel locomotive and the battery power of the pure battery-powered locomotive is lower than a preset value, the diesel locomotive is responsible for pulling the train, and the diesel locomotive outputs a portion for charging the battery of the pure battery-powered locomotive by means of an electronic switch. The system and method for controlling the mainline hybrid power locomotive set use the battery of the pure battery-powered locomotive to recover the kinetic energy of the locomotive, reduce the brake shoe consumption of the vehicle, and improve the economic performance of the locomotive.
