Abstract:
Disclosed are a system and a method for purifying radioactive water using microalgae. The system for purifying radioactive water using microalgae according to the present invention may comprise: a cultivation tank having a closed inner space, into which radioactive water and microalgae breeding in the radioactive water are introduced; a culture medium of a flexible material to which the microalgae can be attached; a culture medium transfer device for inserting the culture medium into the closed inner space of the cultivation tank or taking the culture medium out of the cultivation tank in order to harvest the microalgae which have captured radionuclides; a measurement unit for acquiring various pieces of information from within the cultivation tank; a local control unit for controlling the operation of various devices installed in the cultivation tank according to a control signal which is received remotely; and a remote control system for transmitting the control signal to the local control unit using information received from the measurement unit. The present invention can purify radioactive water which may be generated during the disposal of spent nuclear fuel of a nuclear power plant or in the event of an accident in a nuclear power plant during operation, and/or radioactive water which may be generated from a serious accident, by inputting proper microalgae into a cultivation tank and enabling the microalgae to adsorb and/or absorb radioactive materials in the radioactive water during breeding. Moreover, the present invention can improve the safety of a nuclear power plant by purifying a large volume of radioactive soil contamination in a wide radioactive polluted area.
