Title:
SYSTEM OF SAILS WITH A THICKER PROFILE
Document Type and Number:
WIPO Patent Application WO/2012/015364
Kind Code:
A1
Abstract:
A system of sails with thick profile solves the technical challenge of construction design that will improve aerodynamic lift and reduce aerodynamic drag and will at the same time function in severe weather conditions, enable lowering of sail and will cause only minor additional weight on the mast. Assembly of main sail consists of the front part of the main sail (2), which is permanently mounted on the mast and rear part of the main sail (6) which can be rised or lowered. Mast (8) is mounted inside the construction of sail with the thicker profile. Assembly of the front sail is made of one part of sail textile (10) inside which is mounted tensed batten (14) that forms shape of the thicker profile.

Description:
SYSTEM OF SAILS WITH A THICK PROFILE

Subject of the invention is system of sails with the thicker profile, more precisely front and main sail for sailing boats that enable achieving better ratio between aerodynamic lift and aerodynamic drag than existing classical sails without the thicker aerodynamic profile.

Technical challenge that is solved by the invention is construction that will enable reaching better aerodynamic lift and lower aerodynamic drag and will at the same time function in the severe weather conditions, enable lowering of sail, cause only minor additional weight on the mast and will be relative cheap for production.

There are several known attempts of solutions of this challenge. Probably closest is solution by the patent SI9500182, that enables reaching some similar aerodynamic characteristics as does invention, however that solution causes great additional weight on the mast which results in the substantial and harmful leaning of the sailing boat, that solution is also very expensive for production. Other similar solutions are described in the patents WO2009097638, WO2008132262 and EP1785345.

Common characteristics of all mentioned solutions is that they mostly deal with the improvement of aerodynamics of the sail - with the improvement of the ratio between lift and drag, however they as a rule contain large number of heavy mechanical parts, are expensive, they considerably increase weight on the mast and do not function well in severe weather conditions. None of the mentioned solutions did succeed commercially.

According to the invention are aerodynamic improvements reached in extremely simple way by using materials that are already used in the classical regatta sails, that is mostly sail textile and fiberglass battens. Mast is hidden inside the thicker part of the aerodynamic profile and therefore does not represent an obstacle like it does in the case of aerodynamic of classical sail.

Speciality of the invention is that this construction represent an additional part of sailboat construction - new sails which can be easily mounted on the existing masts, in the case of most of existing solutions they demand for their use round masts or change of basic construction of the sailing boat.

Invention will be described on the following figures:

FIGURE 1 : positions of various views of parts of the invention on the sailing boat

FIGURE 2: top of the mast - side view on the connection of front and rear part of the main sail

FIGURE 3: cut of the main sail - view towards the top of the mast

FIGURE 4: closer view of cut of the main sail - view towards the top of the mast, main parts of the construction

FIGURE 5: cut of the front sail - view towards the top of the mast

FIGURE 6: closer view of cut of the front sail - view towards the top of the mast, main parts of the construction

System of sails with the thicker profile consists of assembly of main sail and assembly of front sail.

Assembly of main sail consists of the reinforcement 1 from party flexible plastic sewn on the front edge of the front part of the main sail 2 which has zip 3 along the whole lengths for the purpose on montage over the mast crosses. Female part of the connection 4 connects front part of the sail 2 with assistance of male part of the connection 5 with the rear part of the main sail 6. Rear part of the main sail 6 has up to approx. one third double layer and in the rear two thirds only one layer. This enables reaching favourable aerodynamic shape of thicker profile which results in substantial aerodynamic lift and low aerodynamic drag. Battens 7 made of fiberglass are with the assistance of classical groove 9 in the same way as with classical sails connected with the one layer part of the main sail 6 that spans up to the mast 8. Assembly of the front sail has also thicker profile, which is reached with assistance of the tensed batten 1 made of fiberglass located inside the sail. In this case only one part of the sail textile 10 is wrapped around the reinforcements 13 made of partly flexible plastics that lie inside the pockets made of sail textile. Sail is in the similar way as classical sails mounted on the sailing boat with one of the classical solutions of grooves 12.

Rear part of the main sail 6 is possible to rise or lower along the height of front part of the main sail 2 which is permanently mounted on the mast 8. Lifting rope 15 lifts rear part of the main mast 6 and functions as well as zip between fixed 2 and removable part 6 of the main sail.
