Description:
A TABLE OR CHAIR LEVELLING DEVICE

The invention relates to a table or chair levelling device. It is well known to make a table or chair levelling device from a (sometimes several times) folded piece of cardboard or (sometimes several times) folded sheets of paper and to place the table or chair levelling device under a table or chair leg so as to level the upper surface of the table or the seating surface of the chair. Such a table or chair levelling device is made by trial and error, i.e. folding the cardboard or sheets of paper, arranging the table or chair levelling device under the table or chair leg, assessing the level of the upper surface of the table or the seating surface of the chair, and removing the table or chair levelling device and repeating the folding process if necessary, all of which can be time consuming and inconvenient.

A table or chair levelling device made from a folded piece of cardboard or folded sheets of paper easily loses its shape. Due to the folding process, and the stress about the fold, a table or chair levelling device made of folded piece of cardboard or folded sheets of paper tends not to have a stable thickness. The leg supporting surface of the table or chair levelling device can become less parallel to the ground engaging surface of the table or chair levelling device over time, in other words less flat over time, causing the lower surface of the table leg to move sideways relative to the leg supporting surface of the table or chair levelling device, until the leg of the table or chair slips sideways off the leg supporting surface of the table or chair levelling device. Moreover, such a table or chair levelling device is not durable or discrete.

An aim of the present invention is to provide an improved, or at least an alternative, table or chair levelling device.

According to the invention there is provided a table or chair levelling device in accordance with Claim 1.

The table or chair levelling device in accordance with Claim 1 is advantageous because a single table or chair levelling device provides three parts of different thickness which can be used to support a table or chair leg, and the user can select an appropriate part depending on the circumstances.

Other optional and preferred features of the table or chair levelling device, and advantages of said features, are set out in the dependent claims, and the description and drawings below.

Features of the table or chair levelling device disclosed in the claims, description and drawings can be combined in any complimentary manner, where such a combination of features would provide a working embodiment of the invention.

A table or chair levelling device in accordance with the invention will now be described, by way of example only, and with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which, Figure 1 is a perspective view of a table or chair levelling device in accordance with the invention,

Figure 2 is a plan view of the table or chair levelling device, in the direction of the arrow A in Figure 1,

Figure 3 is a side view of the table or chair levelling device, in the direction of the arrow B in Figure 1, Figure 4 is another side view of the table or chair levelling device, in the direction of the arrow C in Figure 1 , and

Figure 5 corresponds to the views of the table or chair levelling device obtained in opposing directions to the arrows A, B and C in Figure 1.

Referring to Figure 1, a table or chair levelling device 10 comprises a first part 12, a second part 14, and a third part 16.

The first part 12 comprises a floor (or ground or the like) engaging surface 12a and a table or chair leg bearing surface 12b.

The second part 14 comprises a floor (or ground or the like) engaging surface 14a and a table or chair leg bearing surface 14b. The third part 16 comprises a floor (or ground or the like) engaging surface 16a and a table or chair leg bearing surface 16b.

The floor engaging surface 12a, 14a, 16a of each part 12, 14, 16 is parallel to the table or chair leg bearing surface 12b, 14b, 16b.

The flat floor engaging surface 12a and the table or chair leg bearing surface 12b of the first part 12 are spaced by a first distance dl, the flat floor engaging surface 14a and the table or chair leg bearing surface 14b of the second part 14 are spaced by a second distance d2, and the flat floor engaging surface 16a and the table or chair leg bearing surface 16b of the third part 16 are spaced by a third distance d3.

It will be appreciated that the first distance dl is greater than the second distance d2, which in turn is greater than the third distance d3.

Based on private research conducted by the applicant, in the embodiment shown, first distance dl is about 10 mm, second distance d2 is about 7.5 mm, and third distance d3 is about 5 mm. Other distances can be employed, for example, a dl of about 15 mm, a d2 of about 10 mm and a d3 of about 5 mm.

In a preferred embodiment of the invention, the floor engaging surface 12a, 14a, 16a of each part 12, 14, 16 is generally flat or planar. In a preferred embodiment of the invention, the table or chair leg bearing surface 12b, 14b, 16b of each part 12, 14, 16 is defined by ribs.

The ribs of each part 12, 14, 16 extend perpendicularly to the floor engaging surface 12a, 14a, 16a of the same part 12, 14, 16.

Although not shown in the application for conciseness, in other embodiments of the invention a ribbed floor bearing surface and/or a generally flat or planar table or chair leg bearing surface can be employed.

The reader will note that the first part 12, second part 14, and third part 16 of the table or chair levelling device 10 are oriented in mutually perpendicular planes.

The table or chair levelling device 10 is moulded, for example using plastic(s), a thermoplastic such as cast acrylic, rubber, or another suitable material.

The table or chair levelling device 10 can be moulded from a non-slip material.

The material of the table or chair levelling device 10 can be transparent or wood coloured or another colour.

In use, a person manually arranges the table or chair levelling device 10 under the lower surface of a table or chair leg. The table or chair leg sits in the cavity (shown in the foremost part of Figure 1) defined by the ribs of the table or chair leg bearing surfaces 12b, 14b, 16b of the parts 12, 14, 16. Where the table or chair device 10 is used with a table or chair comprising legs of rectangular cross section, one of the first, second, and third parts is under the table or chair leg, one or preferably both of the other two parts is/are arranged adjacent the side(s) of the table or chair leg, so that the table or chair leg bearing surfaces of one or preferably both of the other two parts is/are in contact with the side(s) of the table or chair leg.

An advantage of the invention is that a single table or chair levelling device provides three parts of different thickness which can support a table leg, and the user can select an appropriate part depending on the circumstances. Another advantage of the invention is that, if for example the first part of the table or chair levelling device lies under the table leg, the second and third parts at least partially resist motion of the table in the plane corresponding to that of the first part of the table or chair device. A further advantage is that if for example the first part of the table or chair levelling device lies under the table leg, the second and third parts tend to lie parallel to the axis of the table leg which is being supported. This arrangement means the table or chair device protrudes minimally from the footprint of the table leg, which is the safest scenario to minimise the risk of a person treading or tripping on the device, and aesthetically pleasing. The ribs are beneficial in that they reduce the quantity of material required, and offer a good strength/weight ratio. The ribs are oriented so as to enable injection moulding of the table or chair levelling device 10 and removal of the table or chair levelling device 10 from the mould.

In use, the ribs resist relative motion between the lower surface of the table or chair leg and the table leg bearing surface which is in contact with the lower surface of the table or chair leg.

It will be appreciated that the "table or chair levelling device" can be used to level any piece of furniture, therefore where the term "table or chair levelling device" is referred to in the description and claims that term can be substituted by the term "furniture levelling device".
