Abstract:
A lightweight manually propelled wheeled collapsible shopping trolley for carrying shopping bags that opens telescopically. The trolley is used for easy transporting of shopping items in bags that are suspended on the carrying hooks. The trolley folds up in a manner similar to a folding umbrella, for easy transportation and convenient storage .when not in use.

Claims:

WHAT IS CLAIMED IS:

1. A collapsible shopping trolley comprising:

(a) a base having a shape of an elongated box with walls and open upwards;

(b) a connector disposed inside said base, wherein said connector can slide inside said base;

(c) a telescopic cargo carrier tube, wherein said telescopic cargo carrier tube is securely connected to said connector; and

(d) a telescopic handle tube, wherein said telescopic handle tube is mounted on said connector.

2. The collapsible shopping trolley of claim 1, wherein said telescopic cargo carrier tube including:

(i) at least two parts.

3. The collapsible shopping trolley of claim 1, wherein said telescopic handle tube including:

(i) at least two parts.

4. The collapsible shopping trolley of claim 3, wherein said telescopic handle tube including:

(i) an upper part;

(ii) a central part, wherein said upper part of said telescopic handle tube can slide inside said central part of said telescopic handle tube;

(iii) a lower part, wherein said central part of said telescopic handle tube can slide inside said lower part of said telescopic handle tube; and

(iv) a handle disposed on said upper part of said telescopic handle tube.

5. The collapsible shopping trolley of claim 4, further comprising:

(e) a lower locking and release mechanism dispose on said lower part of said telescopic handle tube; and

(f) an upper locking and release mechanism dispose on said central part of said telescopic handle tube.

6. The collapsible shopping trolley of claim 5, further comprising:

(g) an axle, wherein said axle connect said lower part, of said telescopic handle tube to said connector, and wherein said lower part, of said telescopic handle tube has at least twenty degrees of a rotational movement capability around said axle.

7. The collapsible shopping trolley of claim 6, wherein said telescopic cargo carrier tube including:

(i) an upper part;

(ii) a central part, wherein said upper part of said telescopic cargo carrier tube can slide inside said central part of said telescopic cargo carrier tube;

(iii) a lower part, wherein said central part of said telescopic cargo carrier tube can slide inside said lower part of said telescopic cargo carrier tube; and

(iv) at least one carrying hook disposed on said upper part of said telescopic cargo carrier tube.

8. The collapsible shopping trolley of claim 7, further comprising:

(h) a lower locking and release mechanism dispose on said lower part of said telescopic cargo carrier tube; and

(i) an upper locking and release mechanism dispose on said central part of said telescopic cargo carrier tube.

9. The collapsible shopping trolley of claim 8, further comprising: (J) a connector pin disposed on said connector.

10. The collapsible shopping trolley of claim 9, wherein said base including:

(i) a front wall; and

(ii) a rear wall, wherein said rear wall has a groove and an indentation.

11. The collapsible shopping trolley of claim 10, wherein said groove has a shape that fit said bottom part of said telescopic handle tube, and wherein said connector pin is located inside said indentation.

12. The collapsible shopping trolley of claim 11, further comprising:

(k) a supporting leg disposed on said base, wherein said supporting leg has at least ninety degrees of a rotational movement capability in relation to said base.

13. The collapsible shopping trolley of claim 12, further comprising:

(1) at least one wheel assembled to said base.

14. The collapsible shopping trolley of claim 12, further comprising: (1) at least eight wheels assembled to said base.

15. The collapsible shopping trolley of claim 14, further comprising: (m) a lock disposed upon said telescopic handle tube, wherein said lock can slide on said telescopic handle tube; and

(n) at least one protuberance connected to said lock.

16. The collapsible shopping trolley of claim 15, wherein said collapsible shopping trolley has an open mode and a folded mode.

17. The collapsible shopping trolley of claim 16, wherein said collapsible shopping trolley has an orthogonal coordinate system, fixed to said base, with F axis, R axis, and U axis, wherein when said collapsible shopping trolley is in said folded mode, has a lateral dimension parallel to said F axis, a longitudinal dimension parallel to said R axis, and a height dimension parallel to said U axis, wherein said lateral dimension is at most twenty eight centimeters, wherein said longitudinal dimension is at most ten centimeters, wherein said height dimension is at most six centimeters, and wherein said collapsible shopping trolley can be stored in a box having internal dimensions of twenty eight by ten by six centimeters.

18. The collapsible shopping trolley of claim 15 wherein said collapsible shopping trolley has weight, wherein said weight is at most seven hundred and fifty grams.

19. A method for enabling a user to carry a load on a shopping trolley, without causing a disturbing strain on the user, and, also enabling carrying said shopping trolley inside a shopping carrier bag with ease, the method comprising the steps of:

(a) providing a collapsible shopping trolley including:

(i) a base having a shape of an elongated box with walls and open upwards; (ii) a connector located inside said base, wherein said connector can slide inside said base; (iii) a telescopic cargo carrier tube, wherein said telescopic cargo carrier tube is securely connected to said connector; and (iv) a telescopic handle tube, wherein said telescopic handle tube is mounted on said connector; wherein said collapsible shopping trolley has an open mode and a folded mode, and wherein said collapsible shopping trolley has an orthogonal coordinate system, fixed to said base, with F axis, R axis, and U axis.

20. The method according to claim 19, wherein said collapsible shopping trolley further includes:

(v) at least one carrying hook disposed on said telescopic cargo carrier tube;

(vi) a handle disposed on said telescopic handle tube; (vii) at least two wheels assembled to said base; (viii) a supporting leg disposed on said base, wherein said supporting leg has at least ninety degrees of rotational movement capability in relation to said base; (ix) a lock disposed upon said telescopic handle tube, wherein said lock can slide outside said base; and (x) at least one protuberance connected to said lock.

21. The method according to claim 20, wherein said collapsible shopping trolley is in said folded mode.

22. The method according to claim 20, wherein said collapsible shopping trolley is in said open mode.

23. The method according to claim 21, further comprising the steps of:

(b) opening said collapsible shopping trolley;

(c) hanging a shopping bag on said carrying hook;

(d) moving said collapsible shopping trolley by pushing said handle;

(e) supporting said collapsible shopping trolley by said supporting leg; and

(f) moving said collapsible shopping trolley by pulling said handle.

24. The method according to claim 22, further comprising the steps of:

(b) removing a shopping bag from said carrying hook;

(c) folding said collapsible shopping trolley; and

(d) inserting said collapsible shopping trolley into said shopping carrier bag.

25. The method according to claim 23, wherein the step of opening said collapsible shopping trolley includes the sub-steps of:

(i) rotating said telescopic cargo carrier tube and said telescopic handle tube, wherein said rotation is around an axis which is parallel to said F axis;

(ii) sliding said connector inside said base;

(iii) rotating said telescopic handle tube wherein said rotation is around an axis which is parallel to said R axis; and

(iv) locking said telescopic handle tube by said lock.

26. The method according to claim 24, wherein the step of folding said collapsible shopping trolley includes the sub-steps of:

(i) sliding said lock;

(ii) rotating said telescopic handle tube wherein said rotation is around an axis which is parallel to said R axis; (iii) rotating said telescopic cargo carrier tube and said telescopic handle tube, wherein said rotation is around an axis which is parallel to said F axis; and (vi) sliding said connector inside said base.

Description:

TELESCOPIC FOLDING SHOPPING TROLLEY

REFERENCE TO CROSS-RELATED APPLICATION

This application claims the benefit of U.S. Provisional Application No. 60/805742, filed Jun. 25 2006.

FIELD AND BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION

The present invention relates to shopping trolleys and, in particular, to collapsible shopping trolleys. Collapsible trolleys of many kinds exist. However, many existing trolleys are difficult or complex to fold or open, especially by young, handicapped, and elderly people. In addition, associated supporting wheels are often difficult to collapse with the trolley itself and are often typically removed prior to collapsing, and require separate storage. Most trolleys have rigid bottom surfaces on which the shopping items are placed. Known trolleys collapse to a flat or elongated frame and are still cumbersome for transporting and storage when not in use.

Moreover, in the majority of existing trolleys, the person pulling the trolley feels the weight of the cargo or shopping items being carried as a strain on his or her arm, due to the angle between the user's arm and the trolley handle and the position of the carrier bags or cargo being transported. There is thus a widely recognized need for y and it would be highly advantageous to have an improved version of collapsible trolley that not only collapses but also folds telescopically similar to a folding umbrella, to a size which is convenient to carry around, fitting into a carrier bag with ease, for example folding to

external dimensions no larger than 28x10x6 cm and weight no heavier than 750 gr., and preventing the weight of the carried items from straining the user.

The prior art does not teach or suggest such collapsible shopping trolleys.

SUMMARY OF THE MVENTIQN

According to the present invention, the weight of the cargo is concentrated in the center and pulls downward, above the base and between the wheels of the collapsible shopping trolley, and does not pull on the arm of the user. The user can pull or push the collapsible shopping trolley with a standing rod, which is a perpendicular telescopic tube assembled of several parts, for example three, that functions as a hanger with hooks for bags and carriers such as supermarket shopping bags.

As used herein the specification and in the claims section that follows, the term "telescopic tube" and the like refer to a tube made from tube sections that slide into one another and can be extended. Common everyday use of telescopic tubes benefits from the ability to shorten them, for easier storage when not being used, and to extend them, when their full length is required for some practical purpose.

The collapsible shopping trolley, according to the present invention, consists of a lightweight manually propelled wheeled trolley for carrying shopping bags that opens and folds up telescopically. The trolley is used for easy transporting of shopping in bags that are suspended on the carrying hooks. The trolley folds up in a manner similar to an umbrella, for convenient storage when not in use or folds up and down telescopically to its base similar to a pocketknife but with a directional shifting track axis pivot that allows the collapsing of all of the parts to a base footing and housing of the trolley which forms a cylindrical shape when completely folded.

Bi order to extend the collapsible shopping trolley, the telescopic handle tube and the telescopic cargo carrier tube must be moved from the trolley base and snapped into their places in the base center. Then the rest of the telescopic handle tube, which consists of two or more parts, is pulled out from the lower part of telescopic handle tube and in a similar way, the rest of the telescopic cargo carrier tube, which consists of two or more parts, is pulled out from the lower part of telescopic cargo carrier tube.

The telescopic cargo carrier tube for supporting the shopping bags is opened in a similar manner. This too, consists of two or more parts separate parts that must be snapped into place. The end part of this carrier section includes a number of carrying hooks onto which the shopping bags can be suspended.

The collapsible shopping trolley has a supporting leg (with or with out a wheel) used in order to prevent the trolley from falling sideways when it is unattended in an upright position. This supporting leg can be moved to a locked position and is connected to the trolley base by a common axis that connects the trolley base and the supporting leg.

Additional objects and advantages of the invention will be set forth in part in the description which follows and, in part, will be obvious from the description, or may be learned by practice of the invention.

According to the present invention there is provided a collapsible shopping trolley including: (a) a base having a shape of an elongated box with walls and open upwards; (b) a connector disposed inside the base, wherein the connector can slide inside the base; (c) a telescopic cargo carrier tube, wherein the telescopic cargo carrier tube is securely connected to the connector; and (d) a telescopic handle tube, wherein the telescopic handle tube is mounted on the connector.

According to further features in the described embodiment the collapsible the telescopic cargo carrier tube including: (i) at least two parts.

According to still further features in the described embodiments the telescopic handle tube including: (i) at least two parts. According to still further features in the described embodiment the telescopic handle tube including: (i) an upper part; (ii) a central part, wherein the upper part of the telescopic handle tube can slide inside the central part of the telescopic handle tube; (iii) a lower part, wherein the central part of the telescopic handle tube can slide inside the lower part of the telescopic handle tube; and (iv) a handle disposed on the upper part of the telescopic handle tube.

According to still further features in the described embodiment the collapsible shopping trolley further including: (e) a lower locking and release mechanism dispose on the lower part of the telescopic handle tube; and (f) an upper locking and release mechanism dispose on the central part of the telescopic handle tube. According to still further features in the described embodiment the collapsible shopping trolley further including: (g) an axle, wherein the axle connect the lower part, of the telescopic handle tube to the connector, and wherein the lower part, of the telescopic handle tube has at least twenty degrees of a rotational movement capability around the axle. According to still further features in the described embodiment the telescopic cargo carrier tube including: (i) an upper part; (ϋ) a central part, wherein the upper part of the telescopic cargo carrier tube can slide inside the central part of the telescopic cargo carrier tube; (iii) a lower part, wherein the central part of the telescopic cargo carrier tube can slide inside the lower part of the telescopic cargo

carrier tube; and (iv) at least one carrying hook disposed on the upper part of the telescopic cargo carrier tube.

According to still further features in the described embodiment the collapsible shopping trolley further including: (h) a lower locking and release mechanism dispose on the lower part of the telescopic cargo carrier tube; and (i) an upper locking and release mechanism dispose on the central part of the telescopic cargo carrier tube.

According to still further features in the described embodiment the collapsible shopping trolley further including: (j)a connector pin disposed on the connector.

According to still further features in the described embodiment the base including: (i) a front wall; and (ϋ) a rear wall τ wherein the rear wall has a groove and an indentation.

According to still further features in the described embodiment the groove has a shape that fit the bottom part of the telescopic handle tube, and wherein the connector pin is located inside the indentation. According to still further features in the described embodiment the collapsible shopping trolley further including: (k) a supporting leg disposed on the base, wherein the supporting leg has at least ninety degrees of a rotational movement capability in relation to the base.

According to still further features in the described embodiment the collapsible shopping trolley further including: (l)at least one wheel assembled to the base.

According to still further features in the described embodiment the collapsible shopping trolley further including: (l)at least eight wheels assembled to the base.

According to still further features in the described embodiment the collapsible shopping trolley further including: (m) a lock disposed upon the telescopic handle

tube, wherein the lock can slide on the telescopic handle tube; and (n) at least one protuberance connected to the lock.

According to still further features in the described embodiment the collapsible shopping trolley has an open mode and a folded mode. According to still further features in the described embodiment the collapsible shopping trolley has an orthogonal coordinate system, fixed to the base, with F axis, R axis, and U axis, wherein when the collapsible shopping trolley is in the folded mode, has a lateral dimension parallel to the F axis r a longitudinal dimension parallel to the R axis, and a height dimension parallel to the U axis, wherein the lateral dimension is at most twenty eight centimeters, wherein the longitudinal dimension is at most ten centimeters, wherein the height dimension is at most six centimeters, and wherein the collapsible shopping trolley can be stored in a box having internal dimensions of twenty eight by ten by six centimeters.

According to still further features in the described embodiment the collapsible shopping trolley has weight, wherein the weight is at most seven hundred and fifty grams.

According to the present invention there is provided a method for enabling a user to carry a load on a shopping trolley, without causing a disturbing strain on the user, and, also enabling carrying the shopping trolley inside a shopping carrier bag with ease, the method including the steps of: (a) providing a collapsible shopping trolley including: (i) a base having a shape of an elongated box with walls and open upwards; (ii) a connector located inside the base, wherein the connector can slide inside the base; (iii) a telescopic cargo carrier tube, wherein the telescopic cargo carrier tube is securely connected to the connector; and (iv) a telescopic handle tube, wherein the telescopic handle tube is mounted on the connector; wherein the

collapsible shopping trolley has an open mode and a folded mode, and wherein the collapsible shopping trolley has an orthogonal coordinate system, fixed to the base, with F axis, R axis, and U axis.

According to further features in the described method the collapsible shopping trolley further includes: (v) at least one carrying hook disposed on the telescopic cargo carrier tube; (vi) a handle disposed on the telescopic handle tube; (vii) at least two wheels assembled to the base; (viii) a supporting leg disposed on the base, wherein the supporting leg has at least ninety degrees of rotational movement capability in relation to the base; (ix) a lock disposed upon the telescopic handle tube, wherein the lock can slide outside the base; and (x) at least one protuberance connected to the lock.

According to still further features in the described method the collapsible shopping trolley is in the folded mode.

According to still further features in the described method the collapsible shopping trolley is in the open mode.

According to still further features in the described method the method further including the steps of: (b) opening the collapsible shopping trolley; (c) hanging a shopping bag on the carrying hook; (d) moving the collapsible shopping trolley by pushing the handle; (e) supporting the collapsible shopping trolley by the supporting leg; and (f) moving the collapsible shopping trolley by pulling the handle.

According to still further features in the described method the method further including the steps of: (b) removing a shopping bag from the carrying hook; (c) folding the collapsible shopping trolley; and (d) inserting the collapsible shopping trolley into the shopping carrier bag.

According to still further features in the described method the the step of opening the collapsible shopping trolley includes the sub-steps of: (i) rotating the telescopic cargo carrier tube and the telescopic handle tube, wherein the rotation is around an axis which is parallel to the F axis; (ii) sliding the connector inside the base; (iii) rotating the telescopic handle tube wherein the rotation is around an axis which is parallel to the R axis; and (iv) locking the telescopic handle tube by the lock.

According to still further features in the described method the step of folding the collapsible shopping trolley includes the sub-steps of: (i) sliding the lock; (ii) rotating the telescopic handle tube wherein the rotation is around an axis which is parallel to the R axis; (iii) rotating the telescopic cargo carrier tube and the telescopic handle tube, wherein the rotation is around an axis which is parallel to the F axis; and (vi) sliding the connector inside the base.

DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF EMBODIMENTS The present invention is a shopping trolley and, in particular, a collapsible shopping trolley.

The principles and operation of a collapsible shopping trolley according to the present invention may be better understood with reference to the drawings and the accompanying description. Before explaining at least one embodiment of the invention in detail, it is to be understood that the invention is not limited in its application to the details of construction and the arrangement of the components set forth hi the following description or illustrated in the drawings.

Unless otherwise defined, all technical and scientific terms used herein have the same meaning as commonly understood by one of ordinary skill in the art to which

this invention belongs. The materials, dimensions, accompanying description methods, and examples provided herein are illustrative only and are not intended to be limiting.

Referring now to the drawings, Figure 1 of the prior art illustrates a bag handler

100, according to Canadian patent No. CA2084326. Bag handler 100 is designated to serve as a shopping trolley, designed to carry with ease and keep together several items with handles such as plastic shopping bags 11, comprising two telescopic tubes

12 and 13, with different diameters, which can fit one into the other and upon which there are metal hooks 14 upon which cargo in bags can be hung and carried. At the upper end of the inner telescopic tube 12, a handle 15 is disposed for the purpose of holding and steering the bag handler 100. At the opposite end of the outer telescopic tube 13 an axle with two rubber wheels 16 is disposed.

Normal operation of the bag handler 100, when loaded with cargo, is by pushing forward with handle 15 with the telescopic tubes at an angle relative to the horizon which is suitable for pushing. In this state, a bag 11 hanging freely on one of the metal

hooks 14 will be hanging downwards according to local gravity, which is shown in the illustration as an arrow marked with the letter g.

In this state, part of the cargo weight is supported by the strength of the hand holding handle 15. this can be very inconvenient for the user, and poses a significant drawback.

Figure 2 is a schematic perspective illustration of a first embodiment of a collapsible shopping trolley 200 of the present invention in a folly open mode. Moving, namely driving collapsible shopping trolley 200 can be done by pushing or pulling, as the user chooses. Collapsible shopping trolley 200 is composed of three main parts, a base 21, a telescopic cargo carrier tube 24 and a telescopic handle tube 31, with the connection between them enabling specific freedom of movement and specific locking modes which will be described later on. Base 21 is shaped as an elongated box with walls and open upwards, as shown in the illustration, with two ends, to each of which at lease one wheel is assembled, enabling moving the collapsible shopping trolley 200 on a surface, such as the floor of a shop, sidewalks, etc. In addition, the illustration shows a supporting leg 23 serving to support collapsible shopping trolley 200 when it is not in motion, as supporting legs do in bicycles and motorcycles.

According to the first shown embodiment of the collapsible shopping trolley 200, the telescopic cargo carrier tube 24 includes three parts: a lower part 25; a central part 26; and an upper part 27; which can be pulled one out of the other through locking mechanisms to the position shown in the illustration. The upper part of the telescopic carrier tube 27 fits into the central part 26 through an upper locking and release mechanism 29, and the central part 26 fits into the lower part 25 through a lower locking and release mechanism 28.

According to the first shown embodiment of the collapsible shopping trolley 200, the telescopic handle tube also has three parts: a lower part 32; a central part 33; and an upper part 34; which can be pulled one out of the other through locking mechanisms to the position shown in the illustration. The upper part of the telescopic handle tube 34 fits into the central part 33 through an upper locking and release mechanism 36, and the central part 33 fits into the lower part 32 through a lower locking and release mechanism 35.

The locking and release mechanisms can also be any type of mechanism for locking and release of telescopic tubes known in the art, such as the locking and release mechanisms used in camera and telescope tripods.

This description is not meant to limit the invention in any way specifically to telescopic tubes of three parts.

The farther end of telescopic cargo carrier tube 24 from base 21 has carrying hooks 30, for example eight, which serve to carry the shopping cargo. There can also be a carrying handle 37 at the end of the telescopic handle tube 31.

For the purpose of providing a complete description of the present invention, an orthogonal coordinate system is defined, fixed to base 21, with F axis going forward in the direction of the motion of collapsible shopping trolley 200 when it is pushed, with R axis going right perpendicular to F axis and U axis going upward perpendicular to the plane generated by F and R axes.

According to the first shown embodiment of the collapsible shopping trolley 200, supporting leg 23 is connected to the bottom of base 21, and can be rotated on a plane parallel to FR plane, such that it can be parallel to F axis in support mode, and parallel to R axis in motion mode, both pushed and pulled.

One of the unique qualities of collapsible shopping trolley 200 is enabling the user to move it with the telescopic cargo carrier tube vertical to the horizon and to direct it such that the center of gravity of the cargo hanging from it is above base 21, thus avoiding any significant strain on the user's hand which is moving collapsible shopping trolley 200.

Figure 3 is a schematic perspective top view illustration of the first shown embodiment of the collapsible shopping trolley 200 of the present invention in folded mode.

The telescopic cargo carrier tube 24 and the telescopic handle tube 31 are each connected to connector 38 by means of an axle 39.

Another embodiment enables connection of telescopic cargo carrier tube 24 to connector 38 by means of a rigid connection such as welding, screwing, etc., or even manufacturing both elements as a single part.

Base 21 is formed as an elongated box, with its longer dimension parallel to R axis, and with walls, including a front wall 40 and a rear wall 41 in which there is a groove 43 shaped to fit the bottom part of telescopic handle tube 32 (when extended).

The front wall 40 has a indentation 42 in which connector pin 44 can move, this pin is connected to connector 38 and has a head whose diameter is larger than the width of indentation 42, ensuring that the connector 38 cannot come out of base 21. The illustration shows a lock 45 with one protuberance 46 or more upon the lower part of the telescopic handle tube 32, and the front wall 40 also has a groove 43.

Opening collapsible shopping trolley 200 is done by pulling handle 37 and pulling the carrying hooks 30 out of base 21, in an upwards rotational motion on planes parallel to UR plane, and pulling in linear motions in order to extend the telescopic handle tube 31 and the telescopic cargo carrier tube 24, and slide connector

38 to the left, until the lower part of telescopic handle tube 32 faces grove 43. Telescopic handle tube 31 is then moved rotationally on UF plane until it fits into the grove 43. Afterwards, lock 45 is slid onto the lower part of telescopic handle tube 32 so that the protuberance 46 are outside of the front wall 40, achieving a locking effect. Folding collapsible shopping trolley 200 is an essentially reversed process to the opening process described just above.

Figure 4 is a schematic perspective bottom view illustration of the first shown embodiment of the collapsible shopping trolley 200 of the present invention in folded mode. This illustration shows support leg 23 in its folded position, with four wheels 22 assembled on each side of base 21.

Figure 5 is a schematic perspective bottom view illustration of a partial view of the first shown embodiment of the collapsible shopping trolley 200 of the present invention in open mode. This illustration shows a clearer view mainly of connector 45 and its protuberances 46. Figure 6 is a schematic perspective bottom view illustration of a partial view of the first shown embodiment of the collapsible shopping trolley 200 of the present invention in open mode. This illustration shows a clearer view mainly of lock 45 and its protuberances 46 as well as connector 38 and both of its axles 39.

Telescopic handle tube 31 should be secured with lock 45 to base 21 by pushing it downwards until lock 45 is hooked to the groove 43 of the front wall 40.

Figure 7 is a schematic perspective side view illustration of the first shown embodiment of carrying hooks 30 of the collapsible shopping trolley 200 of the present invention. As shown in the illustration, the end of the upper part of telescopic cargo carrier tube 27 has several carrying hooks 30.

This illustration is not intended to be limiting the present invention in any way, particularly not with regard to the number of hooks and their design, nor in any other way.
