A telescopic shaft for steering vehicle being built in the steering shaft of a vehicle to fit a male shaft and a female shaft non-rotatably but slidably. Rolling elements are fitted between at least a pair of axial grooves made in the outer circumferential surface of the male shaft and the inner circumferential surface of the female shaft through an elastic body for preload and a slider is fitted between at least another pair of axial grooves made in the outer circumferential surface of the male shaft and the inner circumferential surface of the female shaft. The elastic body for preload performs preload action when the steering torque is not higher than a specified level to exhibit low rigidity characteristics, while the slider engages with the pair of axial grooves in the circumferential direction to exhibit high rigidity characteristics when the steering torque is higher than the specified level.
