Abstract:

The present invention achieves a structure for an outer column to be used in a telescopic steering device and which, even when a steering-lock device is incorporated, is capable of ensuring sufficient strength, making it possible to adjust the front-rear position of the steering wheel, and ensuring smoothness in the operation for keeping the wheel in the adjusted position. Of the end parts (58a, 58b, 59a, 59b) of the auxiliary slits (52a, 52b) for creating a substantially H-shaped slit (19a) for enlarging/shrinking the inner diameter of an engaging/holding part (31a) of an outer column (11b), the rigidity of the nearest end part (58a) located in the section nearest a locking through-hole (37a) and of the farthest end part (59a) located in a diagonal position in relation to the nearest end part (58a) is set so as to be higher than the rigidity of the remaining two end parts (58b, 59b). In addition, projections (61a, 61b) are provided at two positions separated in the vertical direction on the outside surface of one pair of sandwiched plate parts (20a, 20b).
