Abstract:
A terbium paramagnetic garnet single crystal having a strong Faraday effect, a high transmittance to light in the visible region and a large Verdet constant, and a magneto-optical device using the single crystal are disclosed. The terbium paramagnetic garnet single crystal contains at least terbium and at least one of aluminum and gallium, and is characterized that a part of the terbium is substituted with at least one of cerium and praseodymium. The terbium paramagnetic garnet single crystal and the magneto-optical device can be used in various fields such as of electric power, automobiles, and plants, wherein it is necessary to find changes of circumstances by sensing a magnetic field with a light, and optical communication wherein it is necessary to stably emit light.
