Abstract:
A liquid-crystalline compound which not only has a large negative value of permittivity anisotropy (Δε) but also has at least one property selected from stability to heat, light, etc., a high clear point, adequate refractive-index anisotropy (Δn), a large negative value of permittivity anisotropy (Δε), and excellent compatibility with other liquid-crystalline compounds, and the like. The liquid-crystalline compound includes two elements, 1) a tetrahydropyran ring and the group represented by formula 2). This compound hence produces, in particular, the excellent effect of having a large negative value of permittivity anisotropy (Δε). This effect is therefore utilized.
