Description:
THERAPEUTIC KINESIOLOGY TAPE COMPRISING NON-STEROIDAL ANTI-INFLAMMATORY DRUGS (NSAIDS)

Technical field of the invention The present invention relates to a dermal therapeutic tape, and more particularly, the present invention relates to an elastic therapeutic tape containing nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs).

Background of the invention

Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) are often relied on for the treatment of acute or chronic symptoms of inflammation and for relieving pain and soreness from exercise. The NSAIDs are often used in the form of transdermal patches which deliver the drugs into the body through the skin.

European Patent No. EP 0664119 B1 disclosed a percutaneous administration tape whereby the ketoprofen drug is provided in the adhesive layer. United States Patent Application No. US 20050152958 A1 disclosed a ketoprofen patch for the topical application of ketoprofen. However, the base cloth of the conventional medicinal patches only acts as a platform for providing the NSAID without additional benefits. Further, the conventional patches are normally not waterproof and have to be peeled off when taking shower, and are therefore only suitable for use in one day. The use of elastic therapeutic tape such as a kinesiology tape for applying to the body has been well defined as the elastic tape is known to have many beneficial effects to the muscles. The kinesiology tape provides support and stability to muscles and joints while increasing circulation. The kinesiology tape is also known for aiding in restoration of normal fluids perfusion, activation of analgesic system, activation of lymph flow, and adjustment of muscle tension. The kinesiology tape is stretchable such that it allows free movement of the body without restriction to the flow of bodily fluids. The kinesiology tape is often used without any medication incorporated therein to achieve the above mentioned benefits.

It is therefore desirable to provide a therapeutic tape which allows the topical application of NSAIDs and simultaneously confers the benefits of the kinesiology taping.

Summary of the invention It is an objective of the present invention to provide a tape for reducing pain and soreness from physical exercise.

It is also an objective of the present invention to provide a therapeutic tape having the beneficial effects of kinesiology taping and NSAIDs.

It is a further objective of the present invention to provide a therapeutic tape which accelerates the recovery from muscles and joints injuries.

The present invention relates to a dermal therapeutic tape comprising a stretchable base cloth formed from the material of a kinesiology tape, and an adhesive layer provided on one side of the base cloth, wherein the adhesive layer comprises NSAIDs.

In one aspect of the present invention, the NSAIDs is ketoprofen provided at an amount of 0.2 to 0.5 mg/cm 2 of the therapeutic tape.

Detailed description of the preferred embodiments

The present invention will now be described in more detail, in which preferred embodiments of the invention are described herein. This invention may, however, be embodied in many different forms and should not be construed as being limited to the embodiments set forth herein; rather, these embodiments are provided so that this disclosure will be thorough and complete, and will fully convey the scope of the invention to those skilled in the art.

The present invention relates to dermal therapeutic tape comprising stretchable base cloth formed from the material of a kinesiology tape, and an adhesive layer provided on one side of the base cloth, wherein the adhesive layer comprises non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs). The preferred NSAID for incorporating into the adhesive layer is ketoprofen. In a preferred embodiment, the stretchable base cloth is made from any materials which display certain degree of flexibility, including but not limited to woven fabric, and polymeric material such as polyethylene. In a more preferred embodiment, the base cloth is stretchable up to 130 - 140% of the original length, so that the application of the tape allows non-restrictive motion where the tape is applied. The flexibility of the therapeutic tape is also essential in increasing blood flow and circulation and alleviating pain due to muscle and joint injuries. In a preferred embodiment, the stretchable base cloth formed from kinesiology tape comprises an elastic warp thread and a non-elastic weft thread, wherein the elastic warp threads are twisted together with other fibrous threads.

The adhesive layer is provided on one side of the base cloth for adhering tape to the skin of the user. In a preferred embodiment, the adhesive is a pressure- sensitive acrylic resin such that the adhesive is activated and the bonds are formed once it is applied to the skin without external agent such as a solvent, water, or heat. The degree of bonding is dependent on the amount of pressure which is applied to the therapuetic tape. The monomer of the acrylic resin which can be used include, acrylic acid, 2-ethylhexyl acrylate, butyl acrylate, ethyl acrylate, methyl acrylate, ethyl acrylate, n-propyl acrylate, butyl acrylate, pentyl acrylate, dimethylaminoethyl diacrylate, 1 ,6-hexanediol diacrylate, diethylene glycol diacrylate, diethylene glycol triacrylate, trimethylol propane triacrylate, methyl methacrylate, butyl methacrylate, pentyl methacrylate, ethylene glycol dimethacrylate, 1 ,3-butylene glycol amide, trimethylamine acrylamide, trimethylamine methacrylamide, methacrylic acid, and acrylonitrile. In a preferred embodiment, the adhesive layer is disposed in a specific pattern of multiple parallel wave-shaped strips on the base cloth, so that the tape, when adhered to the skin, is non-restrictive and allows a full range of motion. In a preferred embodiment of the present invention, the adhesive layer further comprises hardener and diluent. By way of non-limiting example, the hardener used can be ethylcellulose and methacrylic acid copolymers. The diluents can be any pharmaceutically acceptable inert carrier. In a preferred embodiment, the non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) are provided in the adhesive layer so that the active substance is available for transdermal dissipation into the body when the adhesive layer is in contact with the skin. The NSAIDS which can be used include but not limited to aspirin, choline, magnesium salicylates, choline salicylate, celecoxib, diclofenac potassium, diclofenac sodium, diclofenac sodium with misoprostol, diflunisal, etodolac, fenoprofen calcium, flurbiprofen, firocoxib, ibuprofen, indomethacin, ketoprofen, ketorolac, licofelone, lornoxicam, loxoprofen, lumiracoxib, meclofenamate sodium, meclofenamate acid, mefenamic acid, meloxicam, nabumetone, naproxen, naproxen sodium, nimesulide, oxaprozin, parecoxib, piroxicam, rofecoxib, salsalate, sodium salicylate, sulindac, tenoxicam, tolmetin sodium, and valdecoxib.

In a preferred embodiment, the NSAIDs used are derivative of propionic acid including ibuprofen, naproxen, carpofen, vedaprofen, and ketoprofen. The most preferred NSAIDs according to the present invention is ketoprofen. Ketoprofen is superior to other NSAIDs with regards to its effectiveness to reduce acute pain and soreness from exercise.
