A thermal printer which comprises a head pressing mechanism for pressing a thermal head (17) against a platen (11), a sheet transporting mechanism (5) for guiding a printing sheet (4) between the thermal head and the platen and transporting the same in a sub-scanning direction, a ribbon transporting mechanism (22) for guiding an ink ribbon (21) between the thermal head and the platen and transporting the same in a sub-scanning direction, and a pressing release mechanism (52) for causing the thermal head to separate from the platen against a pressing force of the head pressing mechanism. In the head pressing mechanism, a rod (49) of a solenoid (44), which is elongated in the sub-scanning direction, is disposed to face a back surface of the thermal head and caused to slide in the sub-scanning direction, whereby such sliding motion is converted by a lever link (48) into a motion which separates the thermal head from the platen. Accordingly, the respective parts are arranged such that a lengthwise direction of the solenoid is substantially parallel to that of the thermal head and a sum of areas occupied by the thermal head and the solenoid is reduced to make an apparatus small-sized as a whole.
