Abstract:
The instant disclosure related to a thermoplastic polyurethane composition (TPU) comprising the reaction product of an aromatic polyisocyanate and a diol mixture of a first and second diol where the second diol is at least 15 wt % of the diol mixture. The TPU reaction product further has a hard block content of at least 30 wt % based on the total weight of the TPU reaction product. The TPU compositions disclosed herein have high temperature stability and may be used in applications where high temperature stability is required, such as coating wires and cables or in seals and gaskets.

Claims:
What is claimed is:

1. A thermoplastic polyurethane composition (TPU) comprising: the reaction product of: an aromatic polyisocyanate; a diol mixture including: a first diol selected from one or more of a polycarbonate polyol, a polycaprolactone diol, and a poly(tetrahydrofuran), and a second diol selected from one or more of a perfluoropoly ether, a hydrogenated polybutadiene diol, and a poly(dimethysiloxane), where the content of the second diol in the diol mixture is at least 15 wt % of the diol mixture; and a chain extender; the reaction product having a hard block content of at least 30 wt %.

2. The composition of claim 1, wherein the aromatic polyisocyanate is methylene diphenyl diisocyanate.

3. The composition of claim 1 or claim 2, wherein the chain extender is selected from one or more of 1, 3 -propanediol, hydroquinone bis (2-hydroxyethyl) ether, and 1, 4- butanediol.

4. The composition of any one of the preceding claims, wherein the content of the second diol in the diol mixture is at least 18 wt % of the diol mixture.

5. The composition of any one of the preceding claims, wherein the content of the second diol in the diol mixture is at least 20 wt % of the diol mixture.

6. The composition of any one of the preceding claims, wherein the content of the second diol in the diol mixture is at least 22 wt % of the diol mixture.

7. The composition of any one of the preceding claims, wherein the hard block content is at least 30 wt % of the reaction product.

8. The composition of any one of the preceding claims, wherein the hard block content is at least 32 wt % of the reaction product.

9. The composition of any one of the preceding claims, wherein the hard block content is at least 33 wt % of the reaction product.

10. The composition of any one of claims 1 to 6, wherein the aromatic polyisocyanate is methylene diphenyl diisocyanate, the first diol is a polycarbonate polyol, the second diol is a perfluoropolyether, and the chain extender is hydroquinone Bis (2-hydroxy ethyl) ether, and wherein the composition has a hard block content of at least 33 wt %.

The composition of any one of claims 1 to 6, wherein the aromatic polyisocyanate is methylene diphenyl diisocyanate, the first diol is a polycarbonate polyol, the second diol is a hydrogenated polybutadiene diol, and the chain extender is 1, 3 -propanediol, and wherein the composition has a hard block content of at least 40 wt %.

The composition of any one of claims 1 to 6, wherein the aromatic polyisocyanate is methylene diphenyl diisocyanate, the first diol is a polycarbonate polyol, the second diol is a poly(dimethysiloxane), and the chain extender is hydroquinone Bis (2-hydroxy ethyl) ether, and wherein the composition has a hard block content of at least 33 wt %.

The composition of any one of claims 1 to 6, wherein the aromatic polyisocyanate is methylene diphenyl diisocyanate, the first diol is a polycarbonate polyol, the second diol is a hydrogenated polybutadiene diol, and the chain extender is 1, 4-butanediol, and wherein the composition has a hard block content of at least 43 wt %.

14. The composition of any one of the preceding claims, wherein the TPU composition has a high temperature stability as measured by percent elongation of less than 20% after heating at 200°C for 6 hours.

15. The composition of any one of the preceding claims, wherein the TPU composition has a high temperature stability as measured by percent elongation of less than 18% after heating at 200°C for 6 hours.

16. The composition of any one of the preceding claims, wherein the TPU composition has a high temperature stability as measured by percent elongation of less than 6% after heating at 200°C for 6 hours.

17. The composition of any one of claims 14 to 16, wherein the percent elongation is measured by providing a TPU compositions molded into rectangular plaques of 1.9 to 2.0 mm thick, about 1.0 cm wide and from 13.0 to 15.0 cm long; placing the plaques on a rod; aging the plaques at a temperature of 200°C for 6 hours; allowing the plaques to cool; and determining the change of length.

18. The composition of any one of the preceding claims, wherein the TPU has a retention of tensile strength of 60% and retention ultimate elongation of 60% as determined by ASTM D412 after 6h at 200°C.

19. A cable or wire coated with the TPU composition according to any one of the preceding claims.

20. A seal or gasket formed from the TPU composition according to any one of claims 1 to 18.

21. The use of a TPU composition according to any one of claims 1 to 18 to increase the high temperature stability of a coated cable or wire, a seal or a gasket.

Description:
THERMOPLASTIC POLYURETHANES WITH HIGH TEMPERATURE STABILITY AND USES THEREOF FIELD OF INVENTION

[0001] The instant disclosure relates to thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU) compositions containing the TPU reaction product of an aromatic polyisocyanate, a mixture of diols, and a chain extender where the TPU has a hard block content of at least 30 wt %. The TPU of the instant disclosure exhibit high temperature stability and have a particular use in the formation of cable and/or wire coatings.

BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION

[0002] The use of polyurethanes, including thermoplastic polyurethanes (TPU) in transfer elements, such as tubes or hoses, or coating cable systems is known in the prior art. TPUs offer a variety of benefits that extend the durability and sendee life of transfer elements and cable systems. This is due to outstanding abrasion resistance, high mechanical properties, high impact resistance, low temperature flexibility, good chemical resistance, high cut and tear resistance, and good environmental weathering. The state of the art shows several needs for TPUs when used in transfer elements and cable systems. Some of these needs include for example, the desire for transfer elements or cable systems used under extremely hot environmental or working conditions, such as for example meeting the high temperature requirements for Class D type cables (ISO 6722) or cables with heat ratings of 125° C. or higher (ULI 581 ).

[0003] U.S Patent Application Publication No. 2017/0210846 A I discloses TPU composition that contain alkylene substituted spirocyclic compounds as chain extenders and polycarbonate polyols for high temperature resistance.

[0004] U.S. Patent No. 11,168,175B2 discloses thermoplastic polyurethanes obtainable or obtained by the conversion of at least a polyisocyanate composition, ethane- 1,2-diol as chain extender and a polyol composition, wherein no further chain extender is used aside from ethane- 1,2-diol.

[0005] International Publication No. WO 2019/002226 discloses a highly heat-resistant thermoplastic polyurethane composition for injection or press molding and to a method for preparing the composition, the composition being characterized by being a mixture of a diisocyanate compound or a cross-linking agent and a thermoplastic polyurethane synthesized by brining (A) an ether-containing polyester polyol, (B) a chain extender and (C) a diisocyanate compound into a reaction.

[0006] 'I'hus, there is a general need in the state of the art. for TPl compositions that can be used in systems requiring high temperature resistance, while maintaining other physical properties like tensile strength and elongation, for example.

SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION

[0007] The instant disclosure relates to thermoplastic polyurethane compositions polyurethane (also referred to herein as "TPU compositions") that include the reaction product of an aromatic polyisocyanate, a diol mixture, and a chain extender. The diol mixture used in to form the reaction product comprises a first diol selected from one or more of a polycarbonate polyol, a polycaprolactone diol, and a poly(tetrahydrofuran), and the second diol is selected from one or more of a perfluoropolyether, a hydrogenated polybutadiene diol, and a poly(dimethysiloxane), where the content of the second diol in the diol mixture is at least 15 wt % of the diol mixture, and a chain extender. The reaction product of the TPU composition include a hard block content of at least 30 wt. %.

[0008] In another aspect of the instant disclosure relates to a cable or wire coated with a TPU composition where the TPU composition includes the reaction product of an aromatic polyisocyanate, a diol mixture having a first diol selected from one or more of a polycarbonate polyol, a polycaprolactone diol, and a poly(tetrahydrofuran), and the second diol is selected from one or more of a perfluoropolyether, a hydrogenated polybutadiene diol, and a poly(dimethy siloxane), where the content of the second diol in the diol mixture is at least 15 wt % of the diol mixture, and a chain extender, where the reaction product of the TPU composition had a hard block content of at least 30 wt. %.

[0009] Another aspect of the instant disclosure relates to a seal or a gasket formed from a TPU composition where the TPU composition includes the reaction product of an aromatic polyisocyanate, a diol mixture having a first diol selected from one or more of a polycarbonate polyol, a polycaprolactone diol, and a poly(tetrahydrofuran), and the second diol is selected from one or more of a perfluoropolyether, a hydrogenated polybutadiene diol, and a poly(dimethysiloxane), where the content of the second diol in the diol mixture is at least 15 wt % of the diol mixture, and a chain extender, where the reaction product of the TPU composition had a hard block content of at least 30 wt. %. [0010] In yet another aspect of the instant disclosure relates to the use of a TPU compositions that includes the reaction product of an aromatic polyisocyanate, a diol mixture having a first diol selected from one or more of a polycarbonate polyol, a polycaprolactone diol, and a poly(tetrahydrofuran), and the second diol is selected from one or more of a perfluoropolyether, a hydrogenated polybutadiene diol, and a poly(dimethysiloxane), where the content of the second diol in the diol mixture is at least 15 wt % of the diol mixture, and a chain extender, where the reaction product of the TPU composition had a hard block content of at least 30 wt. % for increasing high temperature stability of a coated cable or wire.

[0011] The following embodiments of the present subject matter are contemplated:

A thermoplastic polyurethane composition (TPU) comprising: the reaction product of: an aromatic polyisocyanate; a diol mixture including: a first diol selected from one or more of a polycarbonate polyol, a polycaprolactone diol, and a poly(tetrahydrofuran), and a second diol selected from one or more of a perfluoropolyether, a hydrogenated polybutadiene diol, and a poly(dimethysiloxane), where the content of the second diol in the diol mixture is at least 15 wt % of the diol mixture; and a chain extender; the reaction product having a hard block content of at least 30 wt %.

[0013] 2. The composition of embodiment 1, wherein the aromatic polyisocyanate is methylene diphenyl diisocyanate.

[0014] 3. The composition of embodiment 1 or embodiment 2, wherein the chain extender is selected from one or more of 1, 3 -propanediol, hydroquinone bis (2-hydroxyethyl) ether, and 1, 4- butanediol.

[0015] 4. The composition of any one of the preceding embodiments, wherein the content of the second diol in the diol mixture is at least 18 wt % of the diol mixture.

[0016] 5. The composition of any one of the preceding embodiments, wherein the content of the second diol in the diol mixture is at least 20 wt % of the diol mixture.

The composition of any one of embodiments 1 to 6, wherein the aromatic polyisocyanate is methylene diphenyl diisocyanate, the first diol is a polycarbonate polyol, the second diol is a poly(dimethysiloxane), and the chain extender is hydroquinone Bis (2- hydroxy ethyl) ether, and wherein the composition has a hard block content of at least 33 wt %.

The composition of any one of embodiments 1 to 6, wherein the aromatic polyisocyanate is methylene diphenyl diisocyanate, the first diol is a polycarbonate polyol, the second diol is a hydrogenated polybutadiene diol, and the chain extender is 1, 4-butanediol, and wherein the composition has a hard block content of at least 43 wt %.

[0025] 14. The composition of any one of the preceding embodiments, wherein the TPU composition has a high temperature stability as measured by percent elongation of less than 20% after heating at 200°C for 6 hours.

[0026] 15. The composition of any one of the preceding embodiments, wherein the TPU composition has a high temperature stability as measured by percent elongation of less than 18% after heating at 200°C for 6 hours.

[0027] 16. The composition of any one of the preceding embodiments, wherein the TPU composition has a high temperature stability as measured by percent elongation of less than 6% after heating at 200°C for 6 hours.

The composition of any one of embodiments 14 to 16, wherein the percent elongation is measured by providing a TPU compositions molded into rectangular plaques of 1.9 to 2.0 mm thick, about 1.0 cm wide and from 13.0 to 15.0 cm long; placing the plaques on a rod; aging the plaques at a temperature of 200°C for 6 hours; allowing the plaques to cool; and determining the change of length.

[0029] 18. The composition of any one of the preceding embodiments, wherein the TPU has a retention of tensile strength of 60% and retention ultimate elongation of 60% as determined by ASTM D412 after 6h at 200°C.

[0030] 19. A cable or wire coated with the TPU composition according to any one of the preceding embodiments.

[0031] 20. A seal or gasket formed from the TPU composition according to any one of embodiments 1 to 18.

DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF THE INVENTION

[0033] The instant disclosure relates to thermoplastic polyurethane (also referred to herein as "TPU") compositions. The TPU compositions disclosed herein generally include a TPU reaction product of an aromatic polyisocyanate, a diol mixture, and a chain extender and, optionally, other additives ("TPU reaction product").

The Polyisocyanate Component:

[0034] The TPU reaction product of the compositions of the instant disclosure are made using an aromatic polyisocyanate component. In some embodiments, the poly isocyanate component includes one or more aromatic diisocyanates. Examples of suitable aromatic polyisocyanates include, but are not limited to, 4,4'-methylenebis(phenyl isocyanate) (MDI), m-xylene diisocyanate (XDI), phenylene- 1,4-diisocyanate, naphthalene-l,5-diisocyanate, and toluene diisocyanate (TDI); as well as aliphatic diisocyanates such as isophorone diisocyanate (IPDI), 1,4- cyclohexyl diisocyanate (CHDI), decane- 1,10-diisocyanate, lysine diisocyanate (LDI), 1,4-butane diisocyanate (BDI), isophorone diisocyanate (PDI), 3,3'-dimethyl-4,4'-biphenylene diisocyanate (TODI), 1,5 -naphthalene diisocyanate (NDI), and dicyclohexylmethane-4,4'-diisocyanate (H12MDI). Mixtures of two or more polyisocyanates may be used. In some embodiments, the polyisocyanate is MDI and/or H12MDI. In some embodiments, the polyisocyanate includes MDI. In some embodiments, the polyisocyanate includes H12MDI.

[0035] In some embodiments, the TPU reaction product is essentially free of, or even completely free of, aliphatic polyisocyanates. [0036] In other embodiments, in addition to the aromatic polyisocyanate described above, the thermoplastic polyurethane reaction product may include one or more aliphatic diisocyanates. Suitable aliphatic diisocyanates include isophorone diisocyanate (IPDI), 1,6-hexamethylene diisocyanate (HDI), 1,4-cyclohexyl diisocyanate (CHDI), decane-1, 10-diisocyanate, lysine diisocyanate (LDI), 1,4-butane diisocyanate (BDI), and dicyclohexylmethane-4,4'-diisocyanate (H12MDI). In some embodiments, mixtures of two or more polyisocyanates may be used.

The Polyol Component:

[0037] The TPU reaction product of the compositions of the instant disclosure are further formed from a polyol or diol. Polyols for use in the instant reaction product include poly ether polyols, polyester polyols, polycarbonate polyols, polysiloxane polyols, and combinations thereof. [0038] Suitable polyols, which may also be described as hydroxyl terminated intermediates, when present, may include one or more hydroxyl terminated polyesters, one or more hydroxyl terminated polyethers, one or more hydroxyl terminated polycarbonates, one or more hydroxyl terminated polysiloxanes, or mixtures thereof.

[0039] Suitable hydroxyl terminated polyester intermediates include linear polyesters having a number average molecular weight (Mn) of from about 500 to about 10,000, from about 700 to about 5,000, or from about 700 to about 4,000, and generally have an acid number less than 1.3 or less than 0.5. The molecular weight is determined by assay of the terminal functional groups and is related to the number average molecular weight. The polyester intermediates may be produced by (1) an esterification reaction of one or more glycols with one or more dicarboxylic acids or anhydrides or (2) by transesterification reaction, i.e., the reaction of one or more glycols with esters of dicarboxylic acids. Mole ratios generally in excess of more than one mole of glycol to acid are preferred so as to obtain linear chains having a preponderance of terminal hydroxyl groups. Suitable polyester intermediates also include various lactones such as polycaprolactone typically made from 8-caprolactone and a bifunctional initiator such as diethylene glycol. The dicarboxylic acids of the desired polyester can be aliphatic, cycloaliphatic, aromatic, or combinations thereof. Suitable dicarboxylic acids which may be used alone or in mixtures generally have a total of from 4 to 15 carbon atoms and include: succinic, glutaric, adipic, pimelic, suberic, azelaic, sebacic, dodecanedioic, isophthalic, terephthalic, cyclohexane dicarboxylic, and the like. Anhydrides of the above di carboxylic acids such as phthalic anhydride, tetrahydrophthalic anhydride, or the like, can also be used. Adipic acid is a preferred acid. The glycols which are reacted to form a desirable polyester intermediate can be aliphatic, aromatic, or combinations thereof, including any of the glycols described above in the chain extender section, and have a total of from 2 to 20 or from 2 to 12 carbon atoms. Suitable examples include ethylene glycol, 1,2-propanediol, 1,3 -propanediol,

1.3-butanediol, 1,4-butanediol, 1,5-pentanediol, 1,6-hexanediol, 2, 2-dimethyl- 1,3 -propanediol,

1.4-cyclohexanedimethanol, decam ethylene glycol, dodecamethylene glycol, and mixtures thereof.

[0040] The polyol component may also include one or more poly caprolactone polyester polyols. The polycaprolactone polyester polyols useful in the technology described herein include polyester diols derived from caprolactone monomers. The polycaprolactone polyester polyols are terminated by primary hydroxyl groups. Suitable polycaprolactone polyester polyols may be made from 8-caprolactone and a bifunctional initiator such as di ethylene glycol, 1,4-butanediol, or any of the other glycols and/or diols listed herein. In some embodiments, the polycaprolactone polyester polyols are linear polyester diols derived from caprolactone monomers.

[0041] Useful examples include CAPA™ 2202A, a 2000 number average molecular weight (Mn) linear polyester diol, and CAPA™ 2302A, a 3000 Mn linear polyester diol, both of which are commercially available from Perstorp Polyols Inc. These materials may also be described as polymers of 2-oxepanone and 1,4-butanediol.

[0042] The polycaprolactone polyester polyols may be prepared from 2-oxepanone and a diol, where the diol may be 1,4-butanediol, di ethylene glycol, monoethylene glycol, 1,6-hexanediol, 2, 2-dimethyl- 1,3-propanediol, or any combination thereof. In some embodiments, the diol used to prepare the polycaprolactone polyester polyol is linear. In some embodiments, the poly caprolactone polyester polyol is prepared from 1,4-butanediol. In some embodiments, the poly caprolactone polyester polyol has a number average molecular weight from 500 to 10,000, or from 500 to 5,000, or from 1,000 or even 2,000 to 4,000 or even 3000.

[0043] Suitable hydroxyl terminated polyether intermediates include polyether polyols derived from a diol or polyol having a total of from 2 to 15 carbon atoms, in some embodiments an alkyl diol or glycol which is reacted with an ether comprising an alkylene oxide having from 2 to 6 carbon atoms, typically ethylene oxide or propylene oxide or mixtures thereof. For example, hydroxyl functional polyether can be produced by first reacting propylene glycol with propylene oxide followed by subsequent reaction with ethylene oxide. Primary hydroxyl groups resulting from ethylene oxide are more reactive than secondary hydroxyl groups and thus are preferred. Useful commercial polyether polyols include poly(ethylene glycol) comprising ethylene oxide reacted with ethylene glycol, polypropylene glycol) comprising propylene oxide reacted with propylene glycol, poly(tetramethylene ether glycol) comprising water reacted with tetrahydrofuran which can also be described as polymerized tetrahydrofuran, and which is commonly referred to as PTMEG. In some embodiments, the polyether intermediate includes PTMEG. Suitable polyether polyols also include polyamide adducts of an alkylene oxide and can include, for example, ethylenediamine adduct comprising the reaction product of ethylenediamine and propylene oxide, diethylenetriamine adduct comprising the reaction product of diethylenetriamine with propylene oxide, and similar polyamide type polyether polyols. Copolyethers can also be utilized in the described compositions. Typical copolyethers include the reaction product of THF and ethylene oxide or THF and propylene oxide. These are available from BASF as Poly THF® B, a block copolymer, and poly THF® R, a random copolymer. The various poly ether intermediates generally have a number average molecular weight (Mn) as determined by assay of the terminal functional groups which is an average molecular weight greater than about 700, such as from about 700 to about 10,000, from about 1,000 to about 5,000, or from about 1,000 to about 2,500. In some embodiments, the polyether intermediate includes a blend of two or more different molecular weight poly ethers, such as a blend of 2,000 Mn and 1000 Mn PTMEG.

[0044] Suitable hydroxyl terminated polycarbonates include those prepared by reacting a glycol with a carbonate. U.S. Patent No. 4,131,731 is hereby incorporated by reference for its disclosure of hydroxyl terminated polycarbonates and their preparation. Such polycarbonates are linear and have terminal hydroxyl groups with essential exclusion of other terminal groups. The essential reactants are glycols and carbonates. Suitable glycols are selected from cycloaliphatic and aliphatic diols containing 4 to 40, and or even 4 to 12 carbon atoms, and from polyoxyalkylene glycols containing 2 to 20 alkoxy groups per molecule with each alkoxy group containing 2 to 4 carbon atoms. The hydrophilic component generally absorbs moisture and causes water to be uniformly distributed on the surface of the particular polymer. This water film formed on the surface increases surface conductivity by means of an ion conduction process, thereby increasing the rate of static charge dissipation. Consequently, conventional low molecular weight internal antistats generally do not improve volume conductivity of the polymer and are generally sensitive to atmospheric humidity, typically providing poor performance at low humidity.
