Abstract:
A thioester-modified polymer which is obtained by modifying a polymer that has a double bond in each molecule with at least one acid selected from among thiocarboxylic acids and dithiocarboxylic acids. This thioester-modified polymer is produced by having a polymer that has a double bond in each molecule react with a thiocarboxylic acid, a dithiocarboxylic acid or a metal salt of a thiocarboxylic acid or dithiocarboxylic acid, and is compounded and used in a diene rubber. If this thioester-modified polymer is compounded in a diene rubber, particularly in a silica-containing diene rubber, the tensile strength and elongation at break, especially the tensile strength and elongation at break at a high temperature (at 100°C) are improved, without lowering the modulus, hardness, heat generation properties and the like. Consequently, a rubber composition having excellent heat resistance and toughness is effectively used as a rubber compound for molding cap treads and side treads for pneumatic tires.
