Abstract:
Disclosed is a thread forming tap wherein frictional torque or heat generation is reduced because the margin section is substantially 0 in connection with a shape near the top of a protrusion (δ=0°) to thereby decrease a contact area with a workpiece at the time of thread forming.  In a rough plastic deformation section separated from the top of a protrusion (δ=0°), the protrusion has an Archimedes curve shape where the amount of relief (R) changes linearly, while, in a finish plastic deformation section near the top, the shape of the protrusion is changed according to a quadratic curve.  Since variations in the amount of relief (R) decreases near the top where the a processing load is large, thread forming is carried out smoothly and thereby frictional torque or heat generation is reduced without sacrificing the durability of the protrusion.  Since frictional torque or heat generation is reduced without sacrificing the durability of the protrusion due to the reduction of margin and the special shape of the protrusion, the occurrence of welding or abrasion of or damage to the protrusion is minimized even when tapping is carried out under conditions susceptible to welding, e.g. high-speed processing, and thereby the lifetime of a tool is prolonged.
