Abstract:

Disclosed is a titanium material having low contact resistance for use in a separator for a solid polymer-type fuel cell. Also disclosed is a process for producing the titanium material. The titanium material is characterized in that particles of a Ti compound containing either C or N are dispersed in the titanium material, the particles of the Ti compound have a surface having a surface layer structure covered with titanium oxide and/or metallic Ti. The surface of the particles when subjected to an XPS analysis exhibits a TiO2-derived Ti2p spectrum, and the height of the maximum detection peak in an Ti2p spectral energy range for TiO and/or the height of the maximum detection peak in a Ti2p spectral energy range for metallic Ti are at least three times the standard deviation of the background in the Ti2p spectral energy range for TiO and/or at least three times the standard deviation of the background in the Ti2p spectral energy range for metallic Ti, respectively, while the height of the maximum detection peak in a C1s spectral energy range and the height of the maximum detection peak in an N1s spectral energy range are less than three times the standard deviation of the background in the C1s spectral energy range and less than three times the standard deviation of the background in the N1s spectral energy range, respectively.
