Abstract:
The present invention provides a tool holder (5) comprising a body (6) adapted to be attached to a longitudinally extending member (20) whereby, by lifting said member, the body may be raised from a lower position to an elevated position, a head (7) pivotally attached to the body and moveable in an arc with respect to the body to take up a selected one of a number of different angular dispositions with respect to the body, means (13) for releasably holding the head in said selected one of a number of different angular dispositions with respect to the body, and tool securing means (16) mounted to the head and adapted to secure, in use, a tool to the head.

Claims:
THE CLAIMS ,
1. A tool holder comprising a body part to be attached to a longitudinally extending member whereby, by lifting said member, the body may be raised from a lower position to an elevated position, a head part pivotally attached to the body and moveable in an arc with respect to the body to take up a selected one of a number of different angular dispositions with respect to the body, means for releasably holding the head in said selected one of a number of different angular disposition with respect to the body, and tool securing means mounted on the head and adapted to secure in, in use, a tool on the head.
2. A tool holder according to Claim 1, wherein the body comprises a cylindrical portion adapted to fit on an end of the longitudinally extending member such as a pole or extendable rod.
3. A tool holder according to Claim 2, wherein said cylindrical portion is internally screw threaded and the longitudinally extending member is screw threaded at one end so as to be engageable with the screw thread in the body.

A tool holder according to Claim 3, wherein a toothed insert is located in an aperture in an upper part of the body, said aperture being an extension of the internally screw threaded part of the body, said insert being adapted to be engaged by the outer end of the screw threaded part of the longitudinally extending member so as to engage said insert with a part of the head which is pivotally mounted on the body part.

A tool holder according to Claim 4, wherein the insert is engageable with a partdisc member attached to the tool securing means of the head, said disc member being pivotally mounted between a pair of lugs mounted on and upstanding from the body and being provided with teeth around the circumference thereof, said circumferentially located teeth being adapted to engage with the teeth of the insert so as to lock the head in the desired angular position with regard to the body and the longitudinally extending member.
6. A tool holder according to any one of the preceding claims, wherein the tool securing means comprises a disc shaped plate member forming the upper part of the head and having a screw threaded spindle and locking nut extending therefrom for locating a tool thereon.
7. A tool holder according to Claim 6, wherein minor projections in the form of radial ribs are formed on the upper tool engaging surface to ensure that a tool clamped thereon will be held against rotation in use.

A tool holder according to any one of Claims 1 to 3 and having a lug mounted on and upstanding from the body and pivotally mounting thereon a partdisc shaped member secured to the underside of the tool securing means of the head, said disc shaped member being provided with a plurality of arcuately located apertures, said member being secured to the lug by a fastener bolt passing through an aperture in the lug and through any one of the apertures in the disc to lock the head in the desired angular position with regard to the body and the longitudinally extending member.

A tool holder according to any one of Claims 1 to 3 and having a lug mounted on and upstanding from the body and pivotally mounting thereon a partdisc shaped member secured to the underside of the tool securing means of the head, said disc shaped member being provided with an arcuate slot within the circumference of the disc shaped member, said member being secured to the lug by a fastener bolt passing through an aperture in the lug and through said slot to lock the head in the desired angular position with regard to the body and the longitudinally extending member.
10. A tool holder according to any one of Claims 1 to 3 and 8, 9, wherein the tool securing means comprises a disc shaped plate member forming the upper part of the head and having a screw threaded spindle and locking nut extending therefrom for locating a tool thereon.
11. A tool holder according to Claim 10, wherein minor projections in the form of radial ribs are formed on the upper tool engaging surface to ensure that a tool clamped thereon will be held against rotation in use.
Description:
TITLE: TOOL HOLDER

FIELD OF THE INVENTION

This invention relates to a tool holder for manual extended' use.

BACKGROUND TO THE INVENTION

There are many occasions when work persons need to work on elevated objects and must bring a tool into engagement with the elevated object for the purpose of carrying out work.

Instances of the above include plastering of ceilings or high portions of walls and washing down ceilings or walls or painting ceilings or walls.

While it is possible to rig ladders or trestles to reach high places, this is not always convenient and may in fact be impracticable in many instances.

The present invention seeks to provide a tool holder which can be used to elevate a tool to a relatively high position as compared to the working height of the person desiring to use the tool.

By use of the word "tool" as used in this specification is meant to include any tool that any person might want to use in the circumstances.

SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION

The present invention provides:-

a tool holder comprising

a body adapted to be attached to a longitudinally extending member whereby, by lifting said member, the body may be raised from a lower position to an elevated position,

a head pivotally attached to the body and moveable in an arc with respect to the body to take up a selected one of a number of different angular dispositions with respect to the body,

means for releasably holding the head in said selected one of a number of different angular dispositions with respect to the body, and

tool securing means mounted on the head and adapted to secure, in use, a tool on the head,

PREFERRED ASPECTS OF THE INVENTION

The body preferably comprises a cylindrical portion adapted to fit on an end of the longitudinally extending member such as a pole or extendable rod.

The cylindrical portion is preferably internally screw- threaded and the longitudinally extending member is preferably screw-threaded at one end so as to be engageable with the internal screw thread in the body.

The use of such screw threading enables the tool holder to be quickly and simply assembled to or disassembled from the longitudinally extending member and to lock the head in the desired angular disposition with respect to the body through a toothed insert engageable by the longitudinal member against a circumferentially toothed part of the head pivotally mounted between lugs extending from the body.

The toothed part of the head is preferably in the form of a disc with circumferentially disposed teeth engageable with the toothed insert.

The body preferably has an upstanding lug or lugs to which the head is pivotally mounted.

The pivotal mounting is most effectively achieved by the use of a pivot pin which desirably is in the form of a rivet.

According to a further embodiment, the tool holder preferably includes a bolt and nut fastener which passes through the head and through a single lug extending from the body and which can be used to tighten the head against the lug.

To enable movement of the head, the bolt preferably passes

through an arcuate slot or an arcuately disposed series of apertures in the head.

The nut for the bolt is preferably a wing nut as that will enable easy tightening and loosening.

In both embodiments, the head preferably includes a tool mounting plate and an upstanding and nut fastener arrangement for mounting a tool to the tool holding plate.

The tool holding plate preferably has minor radial projections on its upper outer surface which can engage with a tool to restrict rotary movement of a tool on the plate.

The specific embodiments of the tool holder in accordance with this invention will now be described by way of non- limiting example with reference to the accompanying drawings.

DETAILED DESCRIPTION WITH RESPECT TO THE DRAWINGS

Referring to Figures 1 to 6, the tool holder 5 comprises a body part 6 and a head part 7, the body part 6 having a cylindrical part 8 internally screw-threaded at 9 with a pair of lugs 10 and 11 upstanding therefrom. An elongated rod 20 having a screw-threaded end is screwed into screw- threaded part 9.

The head part 7 is supported in pivotal manner on pin member 12 extending through and suitably fixed in each lug 10 and 11. A part circular disc 13 is journalled between lugs 10 and 11 on pin 12. Pin 12 extends through the part circular disc 13, which disc is provided with teeth around its circumference and is secured to the underside of a tool support plate 16 on the head 7 and is adapted to mate with a toothed or serrated cylindrical insert 15 slidable in an aperture 14 in the upper part of the cylindrical part 8. It will be appreciated that there may be only one supporting lug mounting the head part.

Tool support plate 16 is fitted on the centre of the upper surface thereof with a tool locating screw-threaded spindle 17 and on the upper face of support plate 16 there are provided minor projections in the form of radial ribs 18 to ensure that a tool (Figures 9 and 10) will be held against rotation in use when clamped to plate 16 by a wing nut 19.

In the use and assembly of this embodiment, the insert 15

is located in aperture 14 and pin 12 is secured in lugs 10 and 11 and through disc 13. A desired tool is secured above plate 16, and the head part 7 is rotated on pin 12 to the desired angle whilst rod 20 is partly screwed into cylindrical part 8 and then further screwed in so as to engage the bottom of insert 15 and force it into locking engagement with disc 13 at the selected angle. Unscrewing of rod 20 for a short distance allows disengagement of insert 15 and rotation of the head part 7 and its disc part 13 to some other angular disposition of head part 7 in relation to body part 6 whereon engagement of insert 15 with disc part 13 can again be made.

In accordance with further embodiments of the invention as illustrated in Figures 7 and 8, the body part 21 of each of the further embodiments is similar to body part 6 as illustrated in Figure 3 except that there need not be the aperture 14 although a small hole may be provided in its place to allow egress of air when rod 20 is screw fitted into body part 21.

As shown in Figure 7 there is only one lug 22 upstanding from body part 21 and a part circular disc 23 of the tool head 24 is journalled on rivet pin 25 extending from lug 22. Disc 23 is provided with arcuately located holes 26 and is locked in the desired angular disposition by a headed bolt and wing nut 27. Tool support plate 28 is similar to tool support plate 16 of Figures 1 to 6, and tool 29 may be rotated to any desired angular orientation as shown in Figures 4 to 6.

Figure 8 illustrates an embodiment similar to Figure 7 whereby an arcuate slot 30 is substituted for the holes 26.

Figures 9 and 10 illustrate the use of a scraper 31 and a paint brush 32 respectively secured to the tool support plate.

In order to provide a firm grip when inserting rod 20, the body part is conveniently provided with ribs 33 on the out surface thereof. This also provides for convenient removal of the body part from the forming die.

The tool holder of the present invention can, it will be appreciated, hold any desired tool apart from the scraper and brush as illustrated in Figures 9 and 10 and the tool holder may be constructed from any suitable material in any desired manner although the applicant has found that a glass filled nylon material injection moulded article is eminently suitable and of the necessary strength and rigidity.

The use of glass filled nylon material obviates brittle action in use as it readily absorbs moisture out of the air.
