Abstract:
A torque generating device according to the present invention is provided with: a rotor which is connected to a shaft, and which is capable of rotating around an axis of rotation of the shaft; an external member which is disposed outside the rotor, and which is provided in such a way as to be capable of rotating relative to the rotor about the axis of rotation; a magnetically responsive material disposed in a gap between the rotor and the external member; a magnetic field generating unit for generating a magnetic field passing through the magnetically responsive material; and an adjusting unit provided along the outer circumference of the shaft, between the shaft and the external member. The adjusting unit includes an accommodating space provided internally with an adjusting sealing member, the magnetically responsive material fills the gap, the accommodating space, and a pathway joining the gap and the accommodating space, and in the accommodating space, fills an adjusting space extending from the position at which the adjusting sealing member is provided, to the pathway, and the adjusting unit is capable of changing the volume of the adjusting space in accordance with a change in the volume of the magnetically responsive material. The volume of a space filled with a magnetic viscous fluid can thus be increased and reduced to follow expansion and contraction of the volume of the magnetic viscous fluid.
