Abstract:
A tracking control apparatus is constituted by being provided with: a detection unit that detects an object in front of a host vehicle; and a control unit that, when vehicles traveling side by side are detected in front of the host vehicle by the detection unit and if the distance between the host vehicle and the vehicles traveling side by side is longer than a separation recognizable distance, which is the distance at which each of a plurality of vehicles can be recognized separately in the vehicle-width direction, controls the traveling of the host vehicle assuming that a preceding vehicle exists between the vehicles traveling side by side. With this tracking control apparatus, when a plurality of vehicles are traveling side by side in front of the host vehicle and even if the preceding vehicle cannot be recognized separately from the vehicles traveling side by side, the host vehicle can be made to track the preceding vehicle without delaying the timing at which the tracking control is started and without giving a feeling of strangeness to the driver of the vehicle.
