A tracking system includes a transponder installed in a mobile body and a self-traveling body tracking the transponder. The self-traveling body has environment detecting means for acquiring reflection environment information on the wall surfaces present around it. The system performs the following tracking cycle. The self-traveling body transmits a first ultrasonic wave, and the transponder receives it and transmits a second ultrasonic wave. The self-traveling body acquires reception information on the direct wave directly arriving at the self-traveling body from the transponder and the reflected waves from the wall surfaces by receiving the second ultrasonic wave, judges from the reception information and the reflection environment information whether the received second ultrasonic wave is the direct wave or the reflected wave, processes the reception information according to the judgment, deduces the position of the transponder, and tracks the transponder.
