Three-dimensional image data is favorably transmitted between devices. A source device (a disc player (210)) receives E-EDID via a DDC of an HDMI cable (350) from a sink device (a television receiver (250)).  The E-EDID includes information about the transmission system of 3D image data adaptable to the sink device.  The source device selects a predetermined transmission system from transmission systems of 3D image data adaptable to the sink device according to the information about the transmission systems of the 3D image data transmitted from the sink device.  The sink device transmits the 3D image data to the sink device by the selected transmission system.  The source device transmits to the sink device the information about the transmission system of the transmitted 3D image data by using AVI InfoFrame packets for convenience of the processing by the sink device.  The sink device processes the 3D image data received from the source device depending on the transmission system and acquires image data for the left and right eyes.
