Abstract:
The present invention relates to the field of wall panels, in particular doors, which are preferably fire proof and/or moisture repellent, more especially those wall panels or doors, which have a transparent portion. Further, the present invention provides a wall panel wherein no fixing means sticking out of the surface of the main panel are needed, in particular by use of a notch.

Claims

1. A wall panel comprising: a first main panel (100), in which a hole (110) is made; a second transparent panel (200), with a size slightly being bigger than said hole, wherein in said main panel a notch (300) is made, wherein the transparent panel fits.

2. The wall panel of claim 1, wherein the notch size is adapted to ensure sufficient fixing of the transparent panel in the wall panel.

3. The wall panel of any of the preceding claims, being a door.

4. The wall panel of any of the preceding claims, wherein the second transparent panel is made of glass.

5. The wall panel of any of the preceding claims, wherein the material of the wall panel being fire proof or moisture repellent or both.

6. The wall panel of any of the preceding claims, wherein within the notch intumescent material (600) is placed to further contribute to fixing of the transparent panel in the wall panel.

7. The wall panel of claim 6, wherein the intumescent material is selected to contribute to the fire proof and/or water repellent properties of the door. 8. The wall panel of any of the preceding claims, wherein optionally one or more finishing means (400, 500), made of another material than the main panel, are provided, whereby at least a portion (500) is placed between the place defined by a portion of the surface of the transparent panel and the (extended) surface of the main panel and in the neighborhood of the notch. 9. The wall panel of claim 8, wherein these means are glued to the main panel.

10. The wall panel according to any one of the preceding claims, wherein notches (300) are provided in opposite edges of the hole (110), an edge portion of the panel (200) provided in each of said notches (300).

11. The wall panel of claim 10, wherein a first (300A) of said notches has a height (HI) different from the height (H2) of the other (300B) of said two notches (300). 12. Method for mounting a panel (200) in an hole or opening (110) in a wall panel (100), wherein the hole (110) is provided with a first groove (300A) in a first edge and a second groove (300B) in an opposite second edge, wherein a first edge portion of the panel (200) is inserted into the second groove (300A) over a first distance, where a second edge portion, opposite the first edge portion, is inserted into the other groove (300A) over a second distance, smaller than the first distance.

13. Method according to claim 12, wherein the first edge portion is slid into the second groove (300B) with the panel (200) in a tilted position relative to the wall panel (100), with the second edge portion of the panel (200) outside the opening or hole (110).

14. Method according to claim 11 or 12, wherein the opposite first and second edge portions of the panel (200) are mounted in the opposite notches or grooves (300A, B), preferably by a fire retarding material, such as an intumescent material (600) filling the grooves (300) at least partly and preferably substantially entirely.

Title: TRANSPARENT PANEL INSTALLATION METHOD AND

RESULTING PANELS FIELD OF THE INVENTION

The invention relates to the field of wall panels, in particular doors, which are preferably fire proof and/or moisture repellent, more especially those wall panels or doors, which have a transparent portion (e.g. in glass). BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION

Doors with a glass panel exist. Typically in the main panel of the door a hole is made with a corresponding size as the requested glass dimensions and the glass is fixed by use of an extra fixing frame, placed on the border of said hole. This fixing means (which can be made of any material) therefore sticks out of the surface of the main door panel. This creates problems in the transportation of at the factory pre-completed doors. Also the material of this fixing means can easy be damaged (during transportation or otherwise).

In the field of doors use of suitable material is recommended, such as especially in terms of properties like fire retarding and/or moisture repellent characteristics, but also light material is recommended. However such materials do not necessary have easy surface in terms of creating an esthetic outlook. AIM OF THE INVENTION

It is the aim of the invention to provide wall panels, in particular doors, which have a transparent portion (e.g. in glass). It is an aim to provide such wall panels, which do not have all of the deficiencies described above, and which are preferably fire proof or moisture repellent and preferably both. SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION

The invention is described in the claims and in particular provides a wall panel wherein no fixing means sticking out of the surface of the main panel are needed, in particular by use of a notch.

The invention is particular related to wall panels of which a main panel is made of a suitable material, especially in terms of properties like fire retarding and/or moisture repellent characteristics and/or smoke-proof and/or airtight and/or acoustic and/or anti-burglary characteristics.

Preferably such main panel is made of light material or materials while the wall panel should still be manufactured such that an esthetic surface is obtained. While this can be obtained by placing a thin panel of suitable material on the wall panel (on both sides), the use of a hole (with notch) and no longer a fixing frame still results in an unsuitable surface.

The invention provides therefore the use of one or more means, made of another material (like wood, PU) than the main panel, to cover the inner area defined by the hole, while still not extended out of the (extended surface) of the surface. It is notable these means do not have necessarily to contribute to the fixing of the transparent panel in the wall panel and hence do not necessarily have to have strength but can be selected for instance for its easy cleaning characteristics (hygienic) and/or its hardness (to avoid damaging). Moreover, these means can be made small also (in essence smaller than an ordinary fixing frame) and hence (although the potentially higher weight material used) this contributes to the light weight properties of the entire wall panel. Consequently, the manner of fixing the described means does not have to contribute either to the fixing of the panels and hence glue can be used.

In the field of fire proof and/or water repellent wall panels, modifications like a notch, in the main panel selected for its fire proof and/or water repellent characteristic, are generally not preferred, as these may alter those characteristics. The use of intumescent material and/or the material of the finishing means and/or the glue is selected therefore to contribute (jointly) to the fire proof and/or water repellent properties of the door.

DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF THE INVENTION

In this description a wall panel should be understood as at encompassing panels which during use are in a fixed position or are movable, such as but not limited to doors.

In this description a hole in a door panel should be understood as an opening in which a panel, preferably an at least partly transparent panel, has been or is to be fixed. In this description a notch has to be understood at least as meaning a groove extending along a side of a hole or opening, open towards said hole or opening, for receiving an edge portion of a panel to be mounted in said hole or opening.

In this description a transparent panel 200 should be understood as at least a panel which over at least part of its surface has a higher transparency than the panel 100 in which it is to be positioned. Preferably the panel 200 has a relatively high transparency, such as but not limited to clear plastic or glass. Such panel 200 may be single or multi layered. In the present disclosure a panel 200 is fixed in a wall panel 100, especially a door, primarily by edge portions in notches, wherein the notches are closed by a suitable material, especially a fire retarding and/or water proofing material, such as an intumescent material, thereby maintaining the relevant fire retarding and/or water repelling properties of the wall panel, whereas other means may be used, such as plastic, for example PU, metal or wood elements for finishing, for example such that smooth, easy to clean surfaces of the wall panel are obtained c.q. maintained.

Figure 1 shows a schematic representation of the invented wall panel comprising: a first main panel (100), in which a hole (110) is made; a second transparent panel (200), with a size slightly being bigger than said hole, wherein in said main panel a notch (300) is made, wherein the transparent panel fits. The hole can be at any place and there can also be a plurality of holes. In a preferred embodiment the hole is placed

symmetrically along at least one of the dimensions. In an embodiment there are at least two notches. In another embodiment there are at least three notches. In an another embodiment there are four notches. Hence with size of the second transparent panel above is meant in at least one of the dimensions wherein a notch is provided in the first main panel. The top part of the figures shows the front view while the bottom part shows a cross section. The cross section indicates an embodiment wherein within the notch intumescent material (600) is placed to further contribute to fixing of the transparent panel in the wall panel. The cross section further shows an embodiment wherein optionally one or more finishing means (400, 500), made of another material than the main panel (each of those can even be different in material), are provided, whereby at least a portion (500) is placed between the place defined by a portion of the surface of the

transparent panel and the (extended) surface of the main panel and in the neighborhood of the notch. Obviously also in said finishing means a corresponding notch is made. A more detailed embodiment of the invention is shown in Figure 2.

As can be seen in the drawings, two grooves 300 can be provided, on opposite sides of the hole or opening 110. For example as shown a lower notch or groove 300A and an upper groove 300B on a lower side and an upper side of the hole or opening 110 respectively. A first groove 300A of the notches or grooves 300 can have a height HI larger than the height H2 of the other groove 300B. The height H of the panel, measured between upper and lower edges of the panel 200 preferably is larger than the corresponding height of the hole or opening 110, measure between the upper and lower sides of the opening in which the groves 300 are provided. Preferably the lower groove 300A has a height H2 which is such that when the panel 110 is inserted into said groove 300A with a lower edge portion, the opposite upper edge portion of the panel 110 extends inside the upper groove 300B. Fixing means 600 such as an intumescent material 600, a heat swelling material, PU based material, or any other suitable fixing material or provision can be provided in the grooves 300, filling the at least partly and fixing the panel inside the opening 110. Preferably this is a fire retarding material as known in the art.

A can be seen in fig. 4A - C, a panel 200 can be tilted such that an upper edge portion can be inserted in direction Fl into the upper groove 300B, as shown in fig. 4A. The panel 200 can be inserted so far as to allow the lower edge portion of the panel 200 to pass into the hole or opening 110 over the lower edge of the opening 110, by pushing the panel 200 upward in the direction F2, as shown in fig 4B. Then the panel 200 can, when in a position substantially parallel to outer faces of the panel 100, be slid in the direction F3, moving a lower edge portion of the panel 200 into the lower groove 300A. Since the height H2 of said groove 300A is relatively small, the upper edge portion of the panel 200 will be retained inside the upper groove 300A too, as shown in fig. 4C. Then the material 600 can be provided in the grooves 300, fixing the panel 200 in the opening 110. Alternatively at least some of the material 600 may be provided prior to or during mounting of the panel 200. Preferably sides of the panel may be fixed with similar or other material and/or fixing means 400, 500, 600 in order to provide for a closed opening or hole 110, preferably fire retarding.

As can be seen in fig. 2 sides of the grooves 300 or at least an upper groove 300B may be at least partly beveled, in order to allow easy

positioning of an upper edge of the panel 200 in tilted position. The sides of the hole or opening 110 may be provided with a stepped edge portion against which side edges of the panel 200 can rest.

It shall be clear that in a similar fashion a panel 200 can be mounted in a wall panel 100 such as a door, with grooves 300A, B in side edges of the opening 110 in stead of or in addition to the upper and lower edges thereof as shown in the drawings.

The invention is by no means limited to the embodiments specifically disclosed in the drawings. Many alternatives can be provided falling in the scope of the disclosure as defined by the claims. For example multiple panels 200 can be provided in the same wall panel. An upper groove may extend into a peripheral side face of the wall panel, for example open into an upper edge of the wall panel, such that the panel 200 can be slid through the groove into the opening. These and other alternatives, including any combination of embodiments or parts thereof as disclosed, are considered to have been disclosed herein as well.
