A travel assistance device 1 equipped with: a communication unit (10) that communicates with vehicles in the vicinity of the host vehicle; a state determination unit (15) that determines whether a driver is in a state in which the driver is able to execute driving operations appropriately; a route-setting unit (16) that sets an evacuation route for enabling the host vehicle to make an emergency stop, on the basis of a fixed algorithm, when the state determination unit has determined that the driver is in a state in which the driver is incapable of executing driving operations appropriately; information acquisition units (11, 12, and 13) that acquire various types of information required for executing the algorithm; an evacuation control unit (17) that executes evacuation travel for enabling the host vehicle to make an emergency stop in accordance with the evacuation route that has been set by the route-setting unit; and an information transmission unit that transmits to vehicles in the vicinity, via the communication unit, information to the effect that the host vehicle is executing the evacuation travel.
