Abstract:
A first treating agent for forming a protective coating which comprises water and, compounded therewith, an alkali silicate represented by the formula: M2O · nSiO2, wherein n represents a number of 2 to 9 and M represents at least one of Na, K, Li and NR4 where each R independently represents a hydrogen atom or an alkyl group&semi a second treating agent comprising the first treating agent and a lubricating agent&semi a metallic material having a protective coating formed by using the treating agent&semi and a method for forming a protective coating which comprises using the treating agent. The second treating agent can form a coating film having excellent self−lubricating property. The treating agents can form a coating film having excellent anti−galling and rust preventive properties which is comparable or superior to those of a coating film formed through a chemical reaction of a metallic base material, by a simple and easy method wherein the treating agent is applied on the surface of a metallic material and then dried.
