Provided is a treatment instrument (2) that applies tension to tissue (S) when the tissue (S) is being cut using an electrode (26) that has been heated by a heat-generating element (41). The treatment instrument (2) comprises a pair of jaws (21, 22). The first jaw (21) comprises a first electrode comprising a projection (36). A first stage (31) having low thermal conductivity is attached to the rear surface of the first electrode (26). The second jaw (22) comprises a second electrode (27) comprising a pair of electrode plates (57A, 57B). A second stage (51) having low thermal conductivity is attached to the rear surface of the second electrode (27). The stages (31, 51) comprise extending faces (71A, 71B, 72A, 72B) that are inclined with respect to an imaginary plane (J). When tissue (S) is clamped between the jaws (21, 22), the extending faces (71A, 71B, 72A, 72B) contact the tissue (S) and apply tension to the tissue (S). Under this tension, thick tissue (S), such as that of a solid organ, can be suitably cut by the projection (36). A high frequency electric current can be transmitted to the tissue (S) via the electrodes (26, 27) to seal or coagulate the tissue (S) as well.
